Grrr... Who knew having a stable weight could be so frustrating. Maintaining the weight loss that I have achieved so far is great, but I am ready to lose more. You guys know that I love research and being my own n=1. I have not been tracking my food intake for the last 10 days, but I have been closely monitoring how my body feels each day after I eat different types of foods.

Problem #1: Lately I have been noticing belly pain after I eat. Sometimes it hurts bad enough that I have to go lay down. My guess is that it is because of the high fat content of the keto diet combined with the fact that I do not have a gallbladder (which helps to digest fats).

Proposed Solution: To try and fix this I am going to increase my protein intake, slightly reduce the fats, and take Ox Bile with meals to help digest the fats.

Problem #2: I have been having muscle cramps and dry throat.

Proposed Solution: Increase water intake, take vitamins/electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, potassium, B complex)

Problem #3: I have not been going to the gym much since this semester started.

Proposed Solution: Figure out 3 days per week that work with my crazy schedule and stick to it.

Hopefully these changes will help to fix these problems and maybe even help to get the weightloss going again.

So, I went a week without tracking and did not lose weight like I had hoped. But the good news is that I didn't gain either. I think I will do another week of no tracking with the aim of being as keto as possible (I know the macros will not be perfect percentage wise, since I'm not tracking). It's important to note that I dined out a few times and went to 2 family cookouts this past week and stayed with my WOE, not gaining any weight! That is a big deal for me. I even cut the cake at my cousin's birthday party without eating a piece, so progress.

Update about the cousin who is getting gastric bypass next year...

At the party I saw her eat 2 slices of cake and go through my aunt's cabinets to find a "Cup O Noodles" and eat it. I asked her to come outside with me. I said, "Please do not get this surgery. I am not judging you, but I really feel that you are not taking this seriously. If you eat like that after surgery you could end up in the hospital or maybe even die. This surgery is not a magic bullet. You still have to change your relationship with food and that needs to happen before the surgery, for your own safety." She just nodded and accepted my advice. That's all I can say to her. It's not in my power to make her see the risk she is taking if she is willfully blind to it. Hopefully her doctors will see that she has made none of the changes they have asked of her and deny her the surgery. I could talk about this topic all night, but I will leave it there.

So, weight loss surgery.

I know this can be a controversial topic in the weightloss community. There was once a time when I wanted the gastric bypass so badly. I thought it would solve everything. I was young and saw it as a magic bullet to lose weight. Luckily my insurance would not cover it, so it never happened. I have two cousins that have had the surgery. One died from infection. The other is so malnourished that she needs frequent transfusions of blood to treat anemia and injections/infusions of vitamins and electrolytes because they took too much of her small intestine and now she can't absorb enough nutrients. It's ten years later and now I have another cousin that is planning to get this surgery.

She and I have been on numerous diets together over the past couple years. I am not judging and only stating facts when I say she never lasted more than 5 days on any of the diets, but her insurance is willing to pay for the surgery. Her BMI is 52% and she was recently diagnosed with T2 Diabetes. I feel so strongly that she is going to get the surgery and risk all those complications when surgery is not a cure. Weight loss is a mental fight. Fighting against that momentary good feeling of eating what you crave and fighting for a long healthy life. She is so young, only 22. That is way too early to give up on trying to do this the natural way and having surgery to permanently alter your body's ability to digest and absorb nutrients.

I am in no way saying anything bad about people who have opted for the surgery. I just think it is a very serious procedure and should not be taken lightly, as my cousin is. She is eating burgers at McDonald's everyday, while talking to me about how excited she is about the surgery. That scares me, especially since overeating after the surgery can cause the sutures to rupture and you can die from that.

I'm being supportive in my conversations with her, while still suggesting delaying the surgery to get her eating the bariatric diet for a couple months first. I'm just not sure how to tell her my feelings about it without hurting her feelings or making her think I'm not supportive.

Any suggestions or similar experiences are greatly welcome.

Okay, struggling for weeks and couldn't even lose 1 lb, tracking every little thing. Then lost that pound after one day of not tracking and letting my body tell me what it needs. This is extra surprising since I am usually gaining water weight and bloating during this time of the month (I'm sure you know what I mean).

I really think I ate more yesterday than I have in a long while. I had eggs, cheese, guacamole, homemade no carb cream cheese icing (like a half a cup lol) for a snack, homemade keto pancakes (200 ml of batter) with sugar free syrup, egg salad with keto mayo and relish, string cheese, bulletproof coffee, keto hot cocoa with heavy cream, and that is just the food that I remember eating since I did not write anything down.

I said I would go 7 days without tracking to see what happens, but if it does well for me this week, I might been done with tracking in general. Fingers crossed, let's see how the next six days go.
