217 this morning
I knew it. Down one pound from yesterday (but it would not show on the weigh in here), and a more realistic weight given my discipline. I should remember that this is typical for me. The weeks where I show the most progress physically never reflect on the scale. My pants are starting to fall down, and I can see my loss, but the scale is not reflecting what I know I have lost. Even the weight I logged is not realistic. I am at least a pound or two less. And then my endocrinologist told me my hip replacement weighs more than the original bone on bone hip. So in my head, I take off even more. Add to that that in all previous diets I was on a diuretic (not now), not for high blood pressure but because hypothyroid people tend to retain fluid, and I am down even more. Given all of that my progress on this diet has been very good, and I deny myself nothing if I really, REALLY want it. I just count it. Yes, I am on Weight Watchers and the "all you can eat of certain foods" does not work for everyone. I just eat normal portions of them. However, I will say it time and again, of all of the diets I have been on, this is the healthiest and the most livable. I lost weight fast on the original Atkins, but I could not give up carbs forever. I lost weight fast on Nutrisystem, though not any faster than this so far, but HATED their food and found it expensive. Yes, I switched to my own version of it eventually, but it still was not good for me. So here I am preaching WW. Years ago, after my daughter was born- she will be 38 in October- I joined WW. I only gained 15 lbs from the time I went to the doctor to the time I gave birth. I was very careful knowing I always struggled to keep my weight almost normal. I came out of the hospital weighing more than when I went in. I nursed her for nine months. Although many nursing mothers lose weight, like my lucky sister-in-law, I did not. My doctor said it would come off when I weaned my baby. He was right, but I still had the 15 lbs on me. I went to WW. They gave me a goal of 30 lbs. After a ten pound loss they asked me to work for them. I told them I had 20 more pounds to go. They said I looked great. I did eventually lose 30 lbs, but I was really too skinny. Over the next ten years, they upped the goal. I could not keep that low weight. Menopause and thyroid dysfunction added to my dietary woes, and rather than become bulimic, I quit. Over the next years, the weight just piled on. So here I am, so many years later, giving it another try. I did learn a lot about nutrition in those days, and always had it in mind. My daughter to this day has great eating habits and never struggled with weight. Wish me luck. I won't be unrealistic. I will not go by the number on the scale but by my health and the way I look.

Well, two weeks and no weight loss. I am still bloated, so I will chalk it up to that or to my hypothyroid body which fights every ounce, and, of course, my age, 70. However, I can actually see the weight loss now, a nice demarcated waistline, a thinner face, looser clothes. That is what I will have to go by so as not to cry. 23 lbs isn't bad since April 20th but all of the loss was that first month, or maybe even less. A very nice member was giving me suggestions for my cruise in late April. I thank you all for your suggestions, but fortunately, for me, cruising has never been about eating. I LOVE to eat. This is true, but I am always cognizant of what goes in my mouth. Maybe if I had a tremendous loss before the trip I would binge a bit, but not this way. I am going to drink wine, once a day , mixed with a diet soda. I will taste my husband's desserts, but I love fruit, so I have no problem having strawberries for dessert. I will allow dessert once if there is really something I have never had before, or haven't had in years. Since this is a luxury cruise line with Canyon Ranch choices, I am sure I can get a dish of sugar free ice cream. I have done that on a previous cruise. I do not do badly on cruises because the excursions involve so much walking that my exercise level goes up. I will keep an eye on things and hope to hold my own because I react so quickly to high sodium in foods and additives. That is strange since I have never had any problems with my blood pressure except for it being too low sometimes. So thanks to all who respond. I do read everything and appreciate your suggestions. It helps to have supporters.

Okay. Glad that excess weight is off. I knew it was water weight, but it is still slow going. But those clothes are fitting better. I realize that it will take years to get to my goal since I haven't been there in 25 years. In one way, as long as it comes off, I will accept that since this is no diet- just a way of life that isn't super easy, but very livable. I even ate one Hershey Kiss yesterday, and counted it, just to prove I could eat it and not be "punished." The only good thing about slow weight loss is that the flesh doesn't hang. Now, maybe when I lose a lot more weight, that will be different, but at present, no sagging skin. Well at my age it will be a miracle if it doesn't happen. So post-menopausal, old and hypothyroid, can be obstacles to weight loss, but it will come off slowly if I stick to it and don't get discouraged.

I am working through my frustration. I went back to my permanent home for a week, stayed on program 100 percent. I didn't even go out to eat once. I stayed away from wine, even though allowed, and was fairly active. I got on the scale there and had lost a pound. However, when I came back to my vacation home and got on the scale I have been using most of the summer, I showed a weight gain, two pounds more than that. To say I was angry would be an understatement. Then I did what I promised myself I would do in cases like this. I had already noticed that my pants were looser, the ones I use often. But they stretch, so I chalked it up to that. However, I LOOKED thinner. So I tried on my non-stretch pants, and they fit beautifully. So I figure that I have lots of liquid fat floating around in my body and it weighs a lot. I then looked back at my weight loss history on different diets. This is par for the course. I don't lose fast. Surprisingly, the early stages of this WW showed a better weight loss than my other diets. However, it is very, very slow now- maybe 2 to 3 pounds a month if I am lucky. So what is the alternative- start eating crap? I am happy with the fact that I am eating such a healthy diet. If I feel deprived, it is because I want to lose the weight faster, not that I can't have something I want. The other day I made pasta for my husband. I could have had it. Instead, I had my boring white meat chicken. I enjoy the sides more than the chicken. I never liked white meat chicken. It doesn't matter how I cook it. So last night I decided to just count the points and have some dark meat chicken. It was much more filling. So I am hanging in without a weight loss in over two weeks. I will keep trying on the pants and use that as a guide. Funny thing is that I am just about the same weight I was two years ago. I just want to get out of this range for good. I am thinking of changing my weigh in day because WW starts the week on your weigh in day, erasing saved points. I want those saved points on a weekend. So I might switch to Tuesdays or even MOndays.
