SUPER BOWL SUNDAY - I don't know about you, but I can't wait!! I'm looking forward to seeing my Eagles going against the Pats, but - as exciting as this may be, I am thinking about all that food I will be making for my dozen guests.

Carne-asada Taco Bar*
Nachos with cheese sauce and salsa on the side
Jalapeno Poppers (yes, with bacon & cream cheese)
Chicken Wings (with my famous hot sauce!) - this one will be tough to ignore
Deviled Eggs*
Beef Sliders (w/ onions, mushrooms, and provolone)
Veggie Tray*
Shrimp & Cocktail sauce*
Chips & Dips

Okay - MODERATION is the key here, right? Or, should I just hide in the bedroom with a bowl of broccoli and ice water? Ha!!!

Actually, I'll eat in moderation the foods with * next to them... and I'll drink LOTS of water too (not just the water in beer either...)

I think the "Counting Calories" diet gets a bum rep. I have done Weight Watchers, Atkins, and South Beach, and while each had success at the time I did them - none of them had any staying power (for me). I have seen and heard many success stories on all types of different plans, but (once again, for me) they were all temporary.

I am finding at my age my metabolism is different and my nutritional needs have changed. As such, I do not want to restrict the foods I eat, rather I'd like to be more mindful of the portion sizes I consume on a daily basis and the best way to do that (for me) is to be aware of the calories by looking at what an actual serving size really is. For example, I bought a can of peaches packed in water last night. The label said "3 servings"... it's a 13.5 oz can, I say to myself - I could eat that in one sitting! Apparently 1 serving is a 1/2 cup of peaches - so, I take out the measuring cup - measure one half cup - and to my surprise, there are quite a few peaches!! Plenty for an afternoon snack with some tea.

By counting calories, and looking at the serving sizes, I saved myself 70 unnecessary calories. Does not sound like much, but it sure does add up! Trust me, I know - I've been eating calories my whole life!! (:

Between you and me: there has to be something said for the old tried-and-true method of input vs. output! (:

Well - 12:05 p.m. came and went I was not hungry, but decided this would be the best time to eat lunch as I wouldn't be tempted to overeat. Yesterday I was starving by 11:45 a.m. after my banana and oatmeal breakfast - I'm sure there's some science for this, but my best guess has something to do with carbs/sugar and how quickly they break down. My two eggs, on the other hand, filled with protein did the job breakfast was meant to do!

Yeah for eggs.

I caved before noon yesterday and found myself in the kitchen (I work from home) pulling bread out of the pantry, ham and Swiss out of the fridge and (my guilty favorite) mayo. I love mayo! I could eat it on just about everything - that and Marie's Blue Cheese (oh man... I need a new mantra "white food is bad food").

That sandwich was so good... so flavorful... and so -- ugh! I felt so guilty afterward. I knew I made a bad choice, and while I was full, I was that "blah full", you know the kind of blah that forces you say to hell with it and grab a slice of pie?

Well, to my credit I didn't eat the pie; instead I climbed the stairs back up to my office and sat at my desk for the next 4.5 hours waiting for dinner. Grilled steak and homemade baked mac-n-cheese!

I should have logged it - but I didn't. I figured what was the use when I ate a large Costco hotdog (minus the bun) for snack at 10:30 p.m., that didn't satisfy because it was kind of gross, so I made a left over steak sandwich (with mayo), and a small bag of Doritos. (I'm embarrassed to even write it; I haven't even shared that little secret with my husband yet).

Today has definitely been a better day - and that's really all I can do right now, is just take baby steps.
