So, what actually happens when the going gets tough? – Unfortunately, some QUIT! And do you know why they quit! In my opinion – it is because they did not believe in themselves. Well, I am here to tell you that if this old dog could learn how to change, how to deal, how to develop new habits, and straighten out old mindsets… then for sure – YOU CAN DO THIS!

Why am I so confident? Because I was very screwed up!!! That’s why!

I didn’t like me. And had absolutely no idea how to go about changing that.

I tried to lose weight. And felt like I literally kicked butt for an entire year… and felt like a failure when it was all said and done. A pound a month! REALLY? Come on now… something else has to be better than this!

But when you get desperate – it makes you do things…motivates you to do things… you wouldn’t ordinarily do.

Atkins was the furthest thing from my mind. But like most other things in my life, I threw myself into it wholeheartedly. I figured it only had to achieve more than 1 pound a month weightloss to be doing BETTER than what I was already doing!!! So, the bar of expectations wasn’t very high! LOL!!!

I soon figured out thru reading and research – that I was about to embark on a LIFE change. And if committed, I would not go back to my old ways of laziness, eating mindlessly, bingeing, self-esteem in the toilet… because to return to a Carb-laden way of eating would RE-FLIP the switch metabolically… and I would again begin to GAIN. (not the desired goal, obviously.) So, to choose low carb…right up front… means to choose a life change that will ROCK your world if you let it!

Since making this commitment – I have stopped thinking about Quitting. And focused on how to LIVE AGAIN! From standing on the shores of the Gulf, with my 91 & ½ yr old Auntie – to building sandcastles with my favorite Cuz’ just like we used to when we were 6 yr olds… from laughing like nuts while riding in Go Carts, to dressing up in a ‘sexy maxi dress’ in a size 6 for my Birthday Dinner w/ my Husband at a 5 Star Resort … this trip was AMAZING! Can you guess what I had for dinner on my Birthday? – Seriously, if I had a nickel for every person on this site who has cheated on their birthday and then ‘justified’ it w/ ‘it’s my birthday!’ … I would be rich!!! I had steak, and salad… just like I do 2 nights a week, and have for the last year and a half.

Is that boring to some? Is that why some quit! – I didn’t find it boring at all. My life has changed. From the inside out. My thoughts have changed. My attitudes have changed. My marriage is in a better place than it’s ever been. I am in a better place than I have ever been!!! All the skills, time, focus, commitment, etc… to reaching my goals w/ Atkins… and learning about and making Low Carb and this Lifestyle Change work for me… has worked in every other area of my life as well. (a little weird, but true.)

My heart breaks for those that Quit! They’re not forgotten. Not by me anyway. Sure hope they come back one day. And moreover, sure hope if you are reading this… that you NEVER QUIT! It sucks to be FAT and MISERABLE. If you are either of those, and want to change that… YOU CAN! If I can do this… YOU MOST DEFINITELY can do this!

Paula, I continue to marvel at your attitude. Wish you could bottle it and send some over. I'm struggling again with the night time carb monster and just wish you would right a book or something so I could read it and be inspired. I know your journal is a book of sorts so perhaps I should just flip back through your journals to get my inspiration? So damn happy for you though, your avatar pic is amazing, you look SO happy - very, very glad for you that life is so good - I know there are peaks and valleys in everyone's life and your life isn't perfect but again happy that you are so happy.

THIS is why I have missed your journals so much! Thank you so much for sharing this! It's really an empowering moment when you FINALLY believe in yourself enough to really KNOW you CAN accomplish the hard things as well as the easy. You are truly inspiring Paula! I'm not doing 'Atkins' per say, but I am doing low carb and this is the best I have felt in a long time. In ALL aspects of my life. It's all about change and what we really WANT. We have to make the conscious effort and commitment to CHANGE. Thank you again for sharing this!

Exactly! I so much appreciate the time & effort you put into providing such profound support for all of us. Finally learning to actually LIVE your life is so liberating it's exhilarating! Looking forward to tomorrow just knowing I am free from the carb monster, free from the cravings, free from the self-destructing life cycle I WAS on, no more beating myself up over my poor choices & no more promising that tomorrow I will be better...because TODAY I have done better, I am loving every minute of it & looking forward to more of the same. To do this I had to let go of a lot of things that I thought I would really miss, but I don't. I don't miss the negativity & the self loathing at all, they were really bad habits that I totally associate with carbs. My life has really changed for the better!

OH I have missed you SOOOO much Paula. So glad you are back. My days are so much better when you are around :) it amazes me how you seem to say what I need to hear so often. not that I am thinking of quitting but the knowldege that someone else knows how I feel and has gotten through to the other side is so helpful. I am glad you had a wonderful vacation, glad you have learned to love and like yourself, glad your marriage is healthy, glad..., glad.... glad.... You rock Paula! For some reason that joy joy joy joy down in my heart song is bubbling in my head :) Thanks

I have quit so many times before - it was always a gradual slide back into old eating patterns. But things seem different this time - maybe I finally do believe in myself.

OH MY GOSH - you guys are AMAZING! You're the ones who inspire ME, you know!!! Ok, let's look at each others responses... we have a bunch of women from all walks and places in life - and WE ARE DOING IT!!! Including you Issy! That's right! Girl, I have been there! Done that!! And Sarahsmom needs our SUPPORT! It's time to step up, look yourself in the mirror, and make a commitment to yourself. Three Days! That's all it will take. 3 Very Hard Days of Cravings and Crankiness... but you come out the other side, ready to devour your goals. Just take two tylenol and drink lots of water, and STAY AWAY from any and all CARBS! (well ok, salad and veggies - yes, but anything else, NO!!!) Cleanse your body of the crap that the carbs and sugars set in motion. OH MY you will feel sooooo much better - I promise you. Then you will feel inspired to really look at your goals and get REVITALIZED in your energy to attack them! Ready - Set - GO!!! Right now, Today... YOU CAN DO THIS! Love you Issy! Love you all.

I love your journals and your attitude! I'll admit. I'm weak. I cheat. But I keep getting back up and dusting myself off and getting back in the game. Someday when I'm a size 6 I hope I have the same attitude and dedication as you do.

Hey Sandy - We're all in this thing together! So good to be back :) And Liltatgirl - there will come a time when you realize a PLANNED indulgence can be managed vs a full on 'cheat' is damaging!
