Greetings Buddies:

As some of you may recall, I am doing a 90 challenge at my gym. The trainer likes to send out emails with articles and ideas to motivate us. I thought his last post was interesting about fear of success and how we self sabotage when close to our goals. Here is an excerpt:

The minute you see success, you seem to fall off the wagon. You cheat on your nutrition program, you slack on your workouts, and you skip your cardio sessions. What’s most perplexing and frustrating is that you know exactly what you should do, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t get yourself motivated to do it. It’s as if some force beyond your control is sabotaging your program and your fat-loss results.

Unfortunately, you’re actually blocking your own success with feelings of being overwhelmed as you experience results and get closer to your goal. You allow yourself to become dominated by these unproductive feelings and behaviors, and your state of mind affects your actions. You’re not able to accept the feelings of success, happiness, and power associated with your health and fitness accomplishments.

Words of the week:Always be prepared!
I am dedicated, determined, and diligent

I know people who do that. But for me, success was the only option. And I didn't know what to tell my friends. What did your trainer say about self sabotage?

It truly does happen. Why do we do that to ourselves?

I have experienced this several times. This time, I know that my partner is a bit jealous of my success, and is physically unable to do much of what I've been doing. I'm trying to push through, knowing that I need the health and strength I'm working for in order to help and support my partner, who has always been there for me (15yrs) through all my ups and downs. I know that I need to succeed for me, that my accomplishments don't hurt my partner,

I think this trainer hit it right on the head. I agree 100% because I have 'been there done that' enough times to recognize the pattern all too well. I HATE when it happens too. I have not ever been able to stop it on my own. I would just stop. Dead in my tracks. No more. Done. I know that if it wouldn't be for this WLS forcing the hand, I still would be struggling with it. But, this time, I have come thru it because my body was in fact, forced to. Now begins the new struggle of maintaining this goal weight of 125.

I think that maintaining success is actually more stressful than achieving it. We have to live up to our OWN expectations--and usually, they are stiffer than everyone else's. My optimum goal is better health and longevity. That's my focus. I can't be side-barred by scale-itis. Actually....I may even abandon the whole scale idea for a good long while. Success is never ending in my mind....you don't "achieve" and then it's over--you achieve because you keep on swimming!

Ahh what he says is SO TRUE. the Second I feel healthier and more fit...I get lazier. I want to reframe from doing this over and over and keep up my success.

Great comments, Buddies! I agree that if we know it is lifestyle change and not temporary "diet" then we just do the best we can each day and we will see changes. For example, I got within 10 or 12 pounds of my goal weight and then let it go and gained back 20 pounds. Why? not sure. But, I keep pushing and today I am more strong and fit than when I was closer to my goal weight. I just keep getting better and work on getting the weight down every day.

Wow. Good stuff, just need the section in which he explains how to overcome it. :P BTW, "If it is important to you, you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse." Big time love this.

So true so true so trueee. This has already happened to be when I got within like 5 pounds of my goal weight. However, I can run a lot longer / faster now even though I'm no where close to my goal weight, so I guess in a sense I'm working "harder"? :P
