I have battle scars too. I wonder - Do the health benefits of home cooked food outweigh the dangers?  

Think of the protein that leaches into the said "sliced" items from your blood. Hee Hee! My humor is sad, I know. ;) 

Not sure of the answer. Loving the home cooking but not loving this big ow. Good thing had hubby on speed dial because although my 4 year old wanted to help because she's a "doctor" this time I needed someone a little bigger. He does a lot of electrical work and works at the hospital. This combo has resulted in sterile gauze and tightly taped on with black electrical tape.  

Keep your fingers away from the slicer, that is no way to CUT down on carbs! 

True, it would be protein however the veggies became quick trash. Could also be that I was trying to absorb the vitamins directly into my blood stream. Shucks! I can't CUT carbs one slice at a time? I know, I was trying to shave off a few ounces!

I did the same thing awhile back. My thumb has a huge scar, but now I use the little handle thingy that holds the veggies while using the mandolin. sometimes I'm in a hurry... not smart. Duct tape comes in all kinds of colors. Prettier than black electrical tape... Take care... 

I think the mandolin slicer is going into early retirement. Not worth it to suffer like this. I'm pretty sure I cut a nerve because the thumb feels kinda funny. I did change the bandage, it's 1" x 1/2" and pretty deep. I will either get those gloves that can't be cut or slice stuff by hand from now on. 

My thumb was the same. It took forever for it to recover. It may not have been quite as bad as yours, but I filleted it back. I didn't get stitches just kept it wrapped. Good luck. . .... I used the mandolin to slice some zucchini this morning and tho't of you... got the little holder out and used it.
