I have been upping my fat and decreasing carbs over the past several days. Today I feel relatively normal but had headaches the past few days. I didn't realize my body would have such a hard time switching fuel sources. I have been mostly adding in coconut oil and some olive oil for fats.

I want to get opinions on MCT oils. There appears to be some differing opinions on whether Lauric acid is beneficial when using MCT oils for quick energy. Most MCT oils are a blend of C-8 (Caprylic) and C-10 (Capric), around 60/40. Lauric acid is C-12. The shorter the carbon chain the quicker they are converted to ketones. MCT oils with Lauric acid have around 38% Lauric acid, 28% Caprylic and 34% Capric acids. I've also found a product called Coconut Cooking Oil which appears to be similar to MCT oil with Lauric acid. I'm using that at the moment as it's cheaper. I do have some MCT oil with Lauric acid on order as well so I'll compare the two.

That was pretty long winded. My question is which MCT oil is better to use, with or without Lauric acid?

I hope everybody has a wonderful day!

when I was transitioning I had headaches as well. I drank a glass of salt water and headaches went right away.

2 cups of full sodium chicken broth- 1 in am, 1 in the pm-- do it for a few days. That will set the electrolytes.//sodium/whatever- back in balance and no more headaches! It can help instantly, in some cases. Not sure about the MCT question. I use coconut oil in my coffee sometimes. Also use it on my face. For "quick energy", I drink American Breakfast Tea (50% more caffeine), or have a strong espresso blend, with a little cream and some coconut oil blasted in with an immersion blender. Sounds like you have a pretty cool experiment to embark on testing those variations. Report back, if you can. That would be interesting to hear about! Have a fantastic day too!

Always interesting, Cat. I use MCT oil without the Lauric Acid - just C-8 and C-10. I also sue coconut oil and unsalted grass fed butter in my Bulletproof coffee in the morning. It holds me well and I have energy. On workout days I also drink my pre-workout drink - beta alanine - and usualy do fine. I am never sure aboit my ketone production...I used to use the strips but have learned urine is not the best measure and the other ways are very very expensive!

I'm nust trying to get my carbs down, not really low and definitely not ketogenic. I worked out this morning with the coconut cooking oil and I did good. I normally have a banana before workouts. My goal is to get my body better at burning fats. I'll see if this works.

I know exactly what you are attempting to do. I really believe running on fats is superior because the energy seems longer lasting and more even than the carb fuel...I suppose my pre-workout has carbs but the MCT and other fats sustain the hour. I am trying to keep low carbs, high fat and a slight increase in protein. we are always tweaking things, aren't we?

Never heard of it. I am a new admirer of coconut oil other than that AVOID ALL PALM OIL.

@HCB - I think tweaking our diets is just as important as cycling workouts.

I use coconut oil, but can't really give any input regarding MCT oils and lauric acid. Reducing carbs - a day or two of low carbs and I can feel it, I think how long it takes me to feel like that depends on how many carbs, especially relatively bad ones, I've eaten before going low carb. I agree we need to be evaluating/tweaking what we do as time goes on adjustments can be important.
