So I tried pawpaw fruit for the first time yesterday. (Picture not mine, found on Google.) I went on a bike ride and while I had plenty of water I forgot to grab some granola bars. So I ended up 17 miles from home with nothing to eat... (cont. in comments)

On my way home I hit a wall (metaphorically speaking) and I really thought I might black out. Paw paw fruits have been falling from the trees onto the trail, so I started looking for some hoping to find some not rotten or gotten into by vermin. I was fortunate to find a clump of 3 fallen beside the trail still attached to a stem, intact, and fully ripe. Tasted amazing (everything tastes amazing when you're that hungry though). Tasted a bit like banana but with a texture more like pudding. Each fruit has 5 or so large seeds between the size of an almond and a Brazil nut.

It took an hour and a half to ride out 17 miles but more than 2 hours to ride back. After eating the pawpaw fruit I finally had enough energy to continue home at a more reasonable pace. Lesson learned: always take granola bars and fruit on any ride longer than 15 miles, so I don't have to eat random food off the ground. Lol.

Way to make it work! I never heard of paw paw fruit, must be nice to have trees full of them!

When I was young, I'd stay with my grandma for the summer vacation. I loved this because she had a beef cattle farm upstate NY, and I adored that farm and I adore my grandma (she's 91!!). One year, I went with her to walk the perimeter of 144 acres while she checked for breaks in the barbed-wire fence that kept the cattle in. It was unusually hot that day, and I must have been complaining about it because I remember my grandma pointing out the crab apples. She said I could suck the juice out (to get some sugar) but not to eat the flesh of the apple (cause it would upset your stomach). Thanks for bringing back such a beautiful memory, JohnZ. Sorry you had to go to the brink of death for it, but it was totally appreciated. 😉

Glad you're okay, that was dangerous. I've never eaten paw paw fruit, but it sounds delicious.

Funny thing is I grew up just down the road from Paw Paw West Virginia but I never knew Paw Paw was a fruit until I was an adult and had moved away. It grows along the C&O canal. Not sure exactly how much farther north south or west, but it is Native to the US east coast, so I know it grows in Maryland, Delaware, Northern Virginia, West Virginia, and probably at least Southern Pennsylvania.
