With all of the running to the hospital for my father in law I have been missing meals and at times my blood sugar is dropping to low 60's or upper 50's. Does anyone have any good ideas on what to carry in the car or with me to give me a sugar boost when I start getting the shakes? I have the same problem after going to the gym and I test low on Blood sugar. It feels stupid to go to the gym and work out then have a couple of cookies to get a boost. Looking for ideas.

Hard Candy, Glucose tabs, protein bar, peanut butter crackers work for me.

My MIL is diabetic. Her endocrinologist suggests she carry string cheese and crackers and a some grapes in case of low blood sugar moments when outside of her home. Some protein, carbs and natural fruit sugar. A bit healthier alternative to hard candies after you've just gotten out of the gym. :)

Avoid those candies! They're just going to make you drop/spike again later! I carry a banana with me when I go to the gym, but any protein powder mixed with juice would work. Are you looking for portable food? I'd say those peanut butter packets with a piece of fruit (orange, banana, apple, etc), protein powder, and maybe a piece of whole-grain bread. Or tuna fish and crackers, with a fruit.

Yes I'm looking for something I can carry with or keep in the car that won't spoil to quickly if I leave it in there. I brought some string cheese with to the gym and it helped a little. Was still at 71 when I got home. Thank you for the ideas! :)

My mom (pre-diabetic) swears by almonds. She always has some with her and tries to eat a few whenever she knows it has been a while since a meal.

Yes nuts - you're looking for complex carbs that don't dump glucose and sent your system out of whack - also why not snack on an apple or orange slices as you work out and test your blood as you go? That way you will never get out of whack to start with. You can even make it a part of your workout - cardio and test, then weights and test, two or three test while you work out is not too much. Record everything in conjunction with your workouts and quantify the data over time to get a good idea of how you're progressing in mitigating the effects of the disease.

What about the almonds before and if needed during working out? If you can avoid the low BG you're safer and will feel better the whole time.

If almonds will give you the balance you need then by all means yes. During a workout however you may need fruit (never watermelon BTW) you can also mix nuts and fruit. I'm a data guy so testing and documenting during workouts is what I suggest. For example you may find out that if you bike for 30 min the last 5 min is hell, check your blood at 25 min if it's low, then eat a slice of fruit at 20 min and see what it does to your test. Collecting data (if nothing else) is a great distraction from the suffering.

I brought a 8oz glucose shake and some trail mix with today and had them right after the gym then went to the store and walked around shopping. When I got home I took Blood Sugar and was at 84. Then had scrambled eggs and 2 hot dogs (no bun) for lunch. 3 hrs later blood sugar was at 85 before supper. Thanks for the input it helped a lot!

granola bars or fresh fruit is a good way to start to keep your blood sugar good also I heard 1 tbsp. of peanut butter is good for the protein
