🤔🧠 Q's for U:

How far would you go in diet & lifestyle if a member of your household was given doctor's orders?

...If your pre-diabetic spouse was told to give up sweets, would you throw out the sugary snacks from the pantry and the ice cream from the freezer?

...If your spouse was diagnosed with high cholesterol, would you reduce the family's red meat meals to only 1-2x/week?

...If your child was diagnosed as overweight/obese, would you switch to cooking at home for the family instead of getting takeout or going to fast food joints?

...If your teenager announced they wanted to be vegetarian, would you try out recipes that the whole family could enjoy?

I would in any of those cases adhere to the person's diet on a certain level, I've helped my father reverse his diabetes, but, I'd still consume meat, I'd do better vegetable recipes, but I'd also cook meat for me.

I would do all of this except cater to a teenage vegetarian... if my kids try this they are on their own making their own dinner

to add to that the funny part is i actually went vegetarian for a year at 18 and I would still expect them to make their own separate meal if that's the lifestyle they are choosing

@Exozaln: very cool that you helped your dad reverse his diabetes! @OTb: I went vegetarian at 16, but ended up having to eat side dishes, so I just spent evenings at my friends' houses instead.👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

@Dazey: Awesome that you and your fiance changed your own lifestyles! But how far are you willing to change for him, and how far is he willing to go for you? "Support" is sometimes an All-Talk-No-Walk kind of issue.

The reality is my 3 year old daughter has me wrapped around her finger so I would probably fold and make her a separate meal my son might take some more convincing😂

I am diabetic, only pre-diabetic now due to diet and exercise, but I still buy my husband things I can't eat. I don't feel some foods are healthy for anyone but I will not deny him these things in MODERATION just because I can't have them. He has small Sundaes occasionally when we eat out and I'm okay with it. He can't have grapefruit but if I wanted one I would eat it and he would not expect me not to. I would not reduce my family's intake of red meat if my husband had high cholesterol because I'm a retired coronary nurse/critical care nurse and high cholesterol doesn't cause heart attacks. Inflammation does. There is no daily limit now for cholesterol intake. I don't eat out a lot as it is unhealthy for people of any age. Not my kind of food. I was a vegetarian as a teenager and did not expect anyone else to change their eating habits to accommodate me. My mom and step dad ate meat. My step dad was a salesman for a meat packing plant. LOL. People need to be responsible for their own diet.

@Morticia: Currently doctors recommend reducing foods high in saturated fat, including processed meats like sausage & bacon, to just 1-2x/week (I am purposely not talking about reducing cholesterol -- just sat fat). I respect that you have a nursing background, but are not a doctor or a Registered Dietician. I do agree that people should be responsible for their own diet -- except for children.

@Otb: 😄 Daughters of any age have magical powers of persuasion on their daddies, so buckle in! At age 3 I was basically a vegetarian for the fact that all I ate was Cheerios, juice and Spaghetti-O's ((shudders)).

I tried Vegan (not too extreme) & Intermittent Fasting 2 times a week with some amazing results. All the best!

@Matt: You went vegan in Houston, Texas? Did anyone in your household make your life easier by doing it, too? Buddy System! 👩🏾‍🤝‍👨🏽

I think that helping your loved one make a lifestyle change by also walking on that journey with them is what love is about. I have altered my lifestyle to help my husband make the changes he needs. When I want something he can't have, I have it when I'm not around him. That is the best support I can give him. I want his health to improve and will do all in my power to help him do so. Plus, it's been beneficial for my health too. Likewise, my 15yo stepdaughter is vegetarian. On the days she is with us I try to make sure we eat meat that isn't going to gross her out (medium-rare steak with blood leaking out with every cut, etc), and make sure she has a full meal, not just some side dish.

@just bananas In the beginning, he was hesitant to try a low carb. I started out with just a low carb breakfast, and in time added low carb lunch, then dinner... After a while, he noticed a difference and enjoyed it. It helped him immensely. He created the Taco Omelette and im not even mad. SO GOOD! 😋 Keto-not so much. He was constantly hungry on keto (state officer, constantly on feet) so we stopped once my thyroid was good. He introduced carnivore to us, but both of us struggle with emotional eating. we leaped in head first because of my back, i was desparate for pain relief (Degenerative spinal stenosis and 2 herniated discs, we are under 30). Thankfully support for us is a 2 way street!

of course. it's like living with an alcoholic who wants to stay sober. While an extreme metaphor, the first few days, weeks, months, having alcohol around is too much of a will power fight. If you take it out of the equation, you build up the habits and mental strength you need to fight those urges / cravings.

I sure would do that.

Only as long as the person needing the changes is also a participant in the meal planning, shopping and preparation. It does not help anyone to just sit to the table and have it served to them. They also need to learn how to make those choices, the meals, etc. themselves. If they only are willing to make changes if it “costs” them nothing and you are doing all the work.— ?

@Asarver: sugar addiction kills, too. Perfect analogy. FS is full of posts every day of dieters that raid the snacks at night and gain weight because their families won’t support them to that level of keeping the kitchen free of temptations.
