It is the weekend of feigned apathy.

I've decided not to weigh in at all this weekend. I'm still tracking my calories to prevent any truly horrifying surprises when I weigh in Tuesday. In the meantime though, I'm not putting a lot of stress on myself with all the holiday food options this weekend.

I made a comment earlier and have since reflected on it a little more - a want and a need are sometimes one and the same. I have come to recognize that I will never achieve my weight loss goals if I have to give up the food that I want and that I love to cook. Every dinner in my house is an indulgence, but I've had to adjust breakfast and lunch to accommodate that need. Likewise, if I want to indulge with a rare Sunday brunch, I'll have to scale back dinner in favor of grilled chicken and vegetables or a salad.

Sure, if I were steel willed and obstinate about my diet, I could lose twenty pounds in a month. The other side of the coin is that I would be a humorless hell harpy with a short temper, no friends, and a perpetually terrified husband. My choice to be healthy shouldn't be an impediment to my enjoyment of life and company. If that means I sacrifice a little bit of expedience to retain sanity and good humor, so be it.

This is right on - I had the same experience of realizing I had to just learn how to balance the big meals with healthier smaller ones - because I was obviously going to continue having them, fairly regularly. I also make a big deal of dinner and therefore try and be careful with breakfast and lunch (and I try and eat less or no dairy/meat through the day). Over time I've also moved to not drinking through the week (except rarely) - so I abandoned my traditional glass or two of wine with dinner. I also am now scaling back dinners Mon-Thurs so as to indulge a bit more with wine and nicer dinners Fri/Sat/Sun. And it's slow, but it's working and that's what matters. Each of these steps were decisions I took one by one, trying to implement them all at once would have crushed me.
