I am a little down lately. I still haven't worked out since last Friday. I have come to the realization that my knee is holding me back with my current weight training routine. I can no longer do normal squats. Since I started squatting my right knee has progressively gotten worse. (It was bad before squatting) It's grinds because I have cartilage damage and arthritis and lately it started hurting all the time, not just after workouts. Per my doctors’ advice, I tried squatting to parallel for a few weeks instead of going all the way down but that still hurts me just as much. I am so bummed. My big goal was to get to the 1000lb club with a combined weight for squat, deadlift and bench press. Now that goal seems impossible. I was actually getting really good at squats and was about to squat 200lbs for reps. I could hardly squat my body weight when I started back in June.

I guess my plan will be to continue my workout routine, but on Mon and Friday I will only be doing lighter weight box squats, to parallel. Wish me luck. I am going to give it a go tomorrow.

My work and my life have been really busy lately. I’m just trying to keep up! Sorry I have not had time to be my normal supportive self here. I hope everyone is doing great!

I’m glad you are not overstressing your body or forcing something to happen that could chance injury. Best wishes with the modified weights and still being awesome regardless. Take care.

Listen to your body. Adjust your routine. Reassess your goals. You do great...but I can totally understand how it feels to be missing those workouts (even when you know it's for the best).

Keep on seeing your doctor and ask to be referred to a bone doc. I was having troubles and after I saw the bone doc he had me doing some different exercises that helped things heal (though arthritus won't). It got me back in the game. Have you tried leg press? That is my go to leg exercise because I have 2 herniated disks in my back and I can go heavy and not damage them.

Check out "Body by science". There are talks on youtube. Light weights... short intense workouts. Workout once a week. It may be what you need during your healing time. You're sure of your squat form? Glucosamine and Condroitin Sulfate together will help the arthritis. Find the book "The Arthritis Cure". It takes about 2 months to feel the effects. Your doctor will tell you they don't work. Of course they don't... you don't need a prescription for them. :|

I hope you feel better and good luck. You have achieved so much already, you will find something else if you can't do squats anymore. I gave up on crunches because of my back. I really loved that exercise but I love my healthy back more.

NM, mangosteen and organic sulfur has done wonders for my wife's grandmother (who has had arthritis for nearly 30 years). Doctor's always fight the hollistic approach....they are paid by the pharmaceutical companies more than they are by us!

For reference: I've been working out since 1984. Great job! . . . . AND, that much increase in weight since June sounds like really too much too soon. Not enough time, in my opinion, for your entire system to adapt to. Tendons, ligaments, cartilage, circulatory system all take some time. And remember, we are always limited to our Genetic Potential. We can't load on the muscles of a giant on a smaller frame, without consequences :) I also tend to get stuck on a favorite exercise, and always have consequences.

I wish I could edit these comments. "Great job!" above is for you.!

I have had some leg and knee pain as well which stops me from working out but just do what you can and soon you'll be able to do more hopefully:)

Thank you all so much. This makes me feel so much better. I work out at home so I don’t have access to a leg press but I think from what I have realized form your comments is that I just need to slow with my weight progression (as I planned to do) and readjust my goals. I'll check out some of the supplement suggestions as well. Then after a few months if I still have problems I guess it will be another trip to the doctor to get a referral. I am trying to get hyped up and out of this funk. Your comments help me get there. Thanks again to you all!

Brent. I should mention that when I was about 40 my left ankle, which I'd broken, was really starting to bother me. I did some research, went to the doc and said "What can I do?" He told me the only option was to fuse the joint. Seriously? I asked about glucosamine and chondroiton. He told me it didn't work. I decided to try it anyway, and three months later I was entirely pain free. I've said it before. I'll say it again. Thanks a lot, doc.

The question you need to ask yourself, is why? I'm 47, and I quit squats and deadlift's year's ago. The writing was on the wall so to speak....hip pains, knee pain's...months off of squat's resolved, only to have issues come back later once resuming training. Squat shoes, wraps, supplements,....these only prolonged the inevitable. Ultimately I decided that I was not out to break world records and that I needed my legs later in life. Now I do lunges, some leg press, but nothing super heavy. I haven't had any joint pain in years, and I'm happier for it. As for supplements, if you want something for joint pain, forget Glucosamine/Chondroitin. Look up "SuperCissus"

Thanks NM and mahjohn. I'm for sure going to order some Glucosamine/Chondroitin. I have joint pain in my hands and elbows as well, so it would probably do me some good outside of my knee issue as well.

Don't waste your money, there is no science to back up using G/C supplements. The current scientific concensus is that they are snake oil.

I am actually a competitive powerlifter too and was having some issues with my knees when squatting. I started with SuperCissus - but found it a little expensive. I then started taking Collagen Hydrolysate which is actually a Collagen Dietary supplement - no knee pain since. It is made by Great Lakes and it is a powder you mix into Drinks. http://www.greatlakesgelatin.com/ is the website - I use the green container and strongly recommend! Although it sounds sort of gross - it is tasteless and does not actually turn into "Jell-o" when you mix it with liquid.

I think you have achieved a ton of good things. I agree with many who say to rest or modify. No reason to be down. I am 46, and there was a time when I was pushing/pulling a ton of weight, but now prefer (as I age) to be more lean, now I do lower weight, more intense reps, minimal rest, whole body movements. I had to adjust my thinking due to elbow, shoulder, and knee pain. I am doing it again, as I started running this summer, love it, but knee issues forcing me to re-evaluate it. I ask - do I want to be able to walk when I am 70 or achieve a fleeting goal? Your joint health is a marathon, not a sprint. Just like the weight loss, etc. You have done too many good things to feel down in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about the knee problems and being down. I'm no expert, only advice I can give is listen to your body what ails you a break for a while. Hope you feel better, focus on the positive and things you can do.
