I think we just found the coolest campsite we've ever had! We're camping right next to ancient petroglyphs at the Parowan Gap in Utah. We only arrived earlier this afternoon, so I've only just started exploring this place, but I did my walk after arriving and I already have pictures to share.

Photo Captions:

1) This is the Parowan Gap. It was created naturally when an ancient, extinct river cut a notch in the this hill.

2) The Gap is right behind our campsite in this picture, so you can see how close we are. We have a huge open space for our campsite. There are lots of hiking trails here to explore, so this is a premium campsite for me. We get to stay here until we run out of water, which will probably be in around 10 days or so. That means I have plenty of time to explore.

3 - 7) On the east side of the Gap are these ancient petroglyphs. For those that don't know, petroglyphs are ancient carvings on rocks. The main attraction here are these, done hundreds of years ago by Native Americans. The Petroglyphs here were created by traveling tribes that were passing through. The carvings here accumulated over 1,000 years as later generations left their marks.

8 & 9) These big boulders caught my eye. There are lots of huge boulders like this lying around, and many of them look like these. The swirling colors and layers made me consider that Mother Nature was busy with her own works of art long before humans scratched out the first petroglyph.

10) This is the track at my new gym. 😆 It's the one I'll use for my walks while I'm here. As you can see, it goes right through the Gap so I'll get to see the Petroglyphs everyday. The countryside here is beautiful too. Stay tuned for those pictures coming soon. I also have all the hiking trails around here to explore, so I'll be busy!

You do know about the inland sea that covered much of the western section of the USA millions of years ago? It was shallow as far as seas go but wide. Extended from Canada down into N and S Dakota , Wyoming , Utah, part of Oregon and ended in Dallas Texas.. construction sites in the Dallas area are full of sea shells.. I cant remember all the details, but check it out if you weren’t aware of it.

That's a humongous campsite! Great photos of the petroglyphs. They almost look like tattooed rocks. 😊 Sounds like you guys will thoroughly enjoy your stay.

I wonder what the petroglyphs represent. Some look like ladders & lots of suns.

How amazing! My favorites are the petroglyphs, not one but all of them. If only those rocks could tell us their stories! 💛

Hi, Kenna! Yes, it's hard to believe it was there, but I know about the ancient sea that covered part of the US. It covered Nevada too, because that's where I found trilobite fossils last year. Trilobite are little shrimp looking creatures that lived at the bottom of the that sea. They also became extinct 500 million years ago, but I have a handful of the impressions they left on the shale stones I found in Caliente, Nevada. 🙂

Lonnie— I once found a large sea shell while hiking up at my ranch at an elevation of 7800 ft. I love this stuff.

It would be great to know what they mean, LambiePi, but no one is sure. I wonder if they weren't just teenagers enjoying an ancient form of graffiti. The article for which I provided a link says, "What these designs mean is still unknown. Archaeologists debate that they represent concepts, ideas or actual happenings. Perhaps they were part of a religious activity or hunting ritual. The local Native Americans consider them to be an important part of their cultural history relating stories of their ancestor's lifeways."

It is absolutely NOT hot here, Shrew. We're at 5,480 feet in elevation here, so it's super cool. The high temperatures will stay mostly in the 60's and 70's all week. There highest temperature this week will be 82° F. Sweet!
