A gigantic "a ha" today! I got a Jawbone UP, a 24 hour wearable bracelet that is a pedometer and somehow knows when you walk, sleep, move, etc. Super cool little device. After several days using it, the UP claims I am burning about 1800 calories TOTAL per day with my activity level. It calculates my every move and it knows my weight, my height, my age and my gender. It also knows how much I'm moving and for how long.

Therefore, I realized, with horror, that this site, much as I LOVE IT, has been vastly overestimating my activity level and my calories burned for things like existing, sleeping and resting, etc. It's been overestimating by something like 1000 calories per day which explains why I wasn't losing weight at 1800 calories per day because - guess why? That's all I'm burning, folks! I thought I was burning 2800 and had a net loss of 1000, when in fact, I was only burning 1800 and eating 1800 was keeping me flat!

So when I got all "drastic" and went down to 1000 calories per day and "suddenly" lost several pounds in a week, it made total sense. I was finally eating less than my body needed and the math suddenly "worked".

MYSTERY SOLVED.

Sadly, while you CAN adjust your RDI (calories in) here on this site to anything you want, you CANNOT adjust your calories out. It simply says that someone at my weight expends XX calories per day existing. But if I'm a 5'4" overweight, sedentary female, vs. a 6'6" male lumberjack in Saskatoon, then I'm willing to wager the calories burned for that same 238 pounds just "existing" would be vastly different.

Hence, starting this week, I will now no longer bother entering my activities here since the calories out and sadly bogus (for me, that is - for others, they may be very accurate).

I will also keep my calorie intake low until I can increase my activity level and therefore take in a few more calories while still being able to lose weight. Even a pound a week is progress, though with 100 pounds to lose, I'd like to see closer to 1.5-2 pounds a week so it doesn't take 2-3 years to get there.

Thanks to all those who helped me solve the mystery, especially my friend in the great white north.

Wow! That's a HUGE revelation! Good sleuthing to figure this out. Maybe you should forward your findings to FS folks. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent find. Way to go. I'm excited. That means you'll quit obsessing over how little you're losing relative to calories and see that you're right on track. Excellent. Not in Saskatoon, not 6' 6". :) Jawbone up... until I looked it up I thought it was your new diet technique. :D

I never use the exercise journal either. When you think about it, even with something like walking, some put a whole lot more energy in it than others.

Yeah, I'm not wasting my time anymore with the exercise journal. I have suspected that FS overestimates the calorie burn...based on the equipment at the gym recording far less than what FS does.....Still a good site, but will only use it to track food and keep in touch and support everyone...

Did you guys know that when you use an exercise machine, even if it considers your weight, age, height, etc., they include your basic metabolic rate? That's right. They include what you would have burned if you had been sitting on your butt. Why do that do that? It's easier to sell a treadmill that says you burned 50 calories in 2 minutes than one that says you burned 3.

I use it just to keep my self accountable to myself. Have been very skeptical about the calorie calculation. also it doesn't have enough activities on it so I throw lots of things into housework.
