2 weeks of No Added Sugar August in the can...

Midway check in for No Added Sugar August. I thought I would wait until October to do an update on how I am doing, but I’m so happy with myself at this point - just 2 weeks in that I wanted to share some things I’ve learned this year. Which might be clear as crystal to every other person on this planet, but I guess I had to figure it out on my own.

1- You cannot snack everyday and expect to lose. It’s just not happening. Have a small sensible snack (I choose 1/4 cup dry roasted unsalted peanuts if I just cannot ignore my hunger pangs). Chugging water to power thru is not an option for me due to be a heart failure patient and having kidney damage in April due to too much Lasix.

2- Sodium is very important and plays a role in weight fluctuations. W/ my set of circumstances there is a limit to what I am supposed to have a day, and I’m learning by the day via charting my weight, water, and macros that over 1k mg a day in sodium will send my weight up the next day, and it takes a day or two to go back to where I was the day I ate too much. So too much sodium sets me back about 72 hours. No bag of chips or order of fries, pizza or burger is worth that.

3- Speaking of macros- chart them. You’re gonna be surprised just exactly how much you are consuming w/o realizing it. I’ve used FatSecret for years off & on w/o really looking at macros but since I’ve gotten serious this year, along coupled w/ watching the connections between the sodium and my weight go up is bizarre.

4- Carbs, I don’t know if I ever hit ketosis. I know you’re supposed to have a weird taste in your mouth but I never notice that. And that’s okay. But I know when I eat less carbs I have less discomfort with my neuropathy in my feet. I know they say once your nerves are damaged by neuropathy that’s it, there’s no fixing it. I only know what I experience so take that however you want.

5- my headache I started in June 2018 isn’t as bad. I was never able to have a spinal tap done to confirm &/ relieve pressure from what my neurologist suspected is idiopathic intracranial hypertension but it’s not as bad these days. So hoping this trajectory of weight loss will solve that problem.

6- eating. Like Dr. Now says, you’re not gonna starve. I do not need to eat 3x a day. Most days I only eat once a day (if I eat more than that it’s my unsalted peanuts). I’ve been able to fast about 24-36 hours several times. I hoped and pushed myself to do more, or more frequently, but I just can’t do it on a schedule. It’s a wake up and see how I’m feeling kinda thing.

7- check your blood work results & then check what the recommended allowances are. My cholesterol is high- not enough that they put me on a medication- but enough that it was highlighted on the panel. I should be having less than 300mg a day. I started my new food regime this spring after the hospital by eating 2-3 eggs a day. ONE egg has about 200 mg. ONE EGG! Now, one, two or three egg whites is a different matter, but I don’t like egg whites unless they’re hard boiled on a salad. So no more eggs for me.

8- You don’t have to have salad dressing or most condiments. Some smushed avocado on spinach is AMAZING. I’m trying to get to love mustard, but I’m getting there for a can of tuna. I need to get some dried dill- pickles are horrific w/ salt and so is the French’s Creamy Dill Mustard I found.

9- forgive yourself. You can’t change yesterday.

…I know I’m hardly the person to go around spouting advice. This isn’t that. This is just what I’ve learned about myself.

Not going to post yet what I’ve lost in August so far. But it’s freaking amazing.

Onward toward part 2 of No Added Sugar August!
