On the advice of my neighbor I did calculations on my target heart rate whcn I do my walking. Found out my Maximum HR for a 65 yr old, my target zones for exercising to burn fat, so now I take my pulse at least 3-4 times during my walks so I know where my heart rate is working, and if I'm getting the benefit of walking. It's very easy for me to get my heart rate at 70-75% zone, but have a hard time slowing down at the end of my walks to slow my heart rate, working on that, but feel pretty good that I'm at least walking at a rate that should do some good :)

I suggest a heart rate monitor, which I wear anytime I'm doing more extensive exercise (Stairmaster, elliptical, even XBox!). You can certainly wear it while walking. It will give you a continuous readout on your heart rate, so you don't have to stop and wonder if you're catching every beat! Mine has an elastic chest strap transmitter which is worn under your clothes, right under the breasts and then the readout is on a "watch" on your wrist. LOVE mine....I got a fairly inexpensive one that gives me a large enough readout so that I can read it without glasses! I don't need the ones with a ton of bells and whistles, just the heart rate and a few other things suits me just fine. I think mine is a Timex.

I take my resting heart rate between rop skipping intervals. Increasing that heart rate safely is great for so many facets of our healthy lifestyle -- good all around really!
