Haven't recorded a lot of journal entries lately, but continue to keep track of my food here. Went to doctor at the beginning of the month, feeling my blood work numbers were going to be great and they weren't. They went up a bit from 5.9 to 6.4 and my cholesterol is way high, so doc wants to start me on cholesterol meds. I got them, but haven't started taking them yet. It totally sucks! I went over my food log and noticed I've been "cheating" by going over my carb amounts, but still eating the right foods. I don't think I can go by Net carbs like some do. So I'm really watching those carbs now. I also found I was baking a lot more since I'm home and I don't know if I'm right, but I think the sugar substitutes are raising my sugars (even though they are not supposed to). So, I go back at the end of December and am really cutting back on the baked stuff. With the 2 holidays, however, I think I'm doomed. {smile} I pulled tendons in my hand, so couldn't do a lot of exercises (I miss my yoga). I did some researched and found a bunch of "standing" exercises to work my core. With these and my walking, I'm hoping I get back where I belong. I haven't been sleeping either, since retiring I've been using savings, turns out someone screwed up my paperwork. I started calling at week 4 and now at 6 weeks (without a check) they tell me they can "see the problem". Supposedly it's all corrected and I should get one next week. We'll see. They stress raises diabetic sugars, maybe that's why they went higher or maybe it's a combination of all these things - I don't know, but am a bit discouraged. Sorry for the long rant, I try to stay positive most of the time, but today just not feeling it. Just a side note: I'm doing "no scale November" with a Keto site I visit (a few friends of mine are there and we made a pact) - so I haven't recorded a weight here - that may be adding to my stress too! lol

Hope things look up for you! You have made lots of changes, lost a bunch of weight (BTW, I loved your story of your pants falling down). And you got to retire! I am a bit behind you (4-5 years before I can retire) and I just tested T2D in July. I changed to keto with 20g daily carb limit and lost 30 lbs. Have you looked at Carrie Brown's Keto recipes? I just got her "Keto for the Holidays" and can't wait to try them out!

You've done really well👏👏 Retirement is a big time of change, in your case made more stressful by health and financial issues. Sugar substitutes may still raise your insulin ( if not blood sugar levels) Record everything, you will establish a new routine and it will all work out! Congrats on all your progress so far , you are An inspiration 😁👍 Happy retirement 🤗

Just do not give up. That is very hard when everything seems to be breaking away from you. You have done the hardest part, admitting to all the hurdles...here. Just a day at a time, a meal at a time. KCKO

You have a lot going on! I retired at 56 which was too young to start taking regular IRA distributions or get Social Security so I lived on savings which very stressful! So I understand that and also not getting enough sleep. Could your KETO diet have impacted your cholesterol? Just wondering, I'm always talking to my doctor about the diet I should follow. I mentioned to him that I eat eggs and sometimes shrimp trying to get enough protein and he said they both have cholesterol in them. I asked if my cholesterol was high and it wasn't so I wasn't sure if he was suggesting I limit eggs and shrimp. He did say for me NOT to do a high fat diet because of a family history of heart problems and high cholesterol and potential problems with my gall bladder. It gets hard figuring out how to eat to get healthy or stay healthy. You've accomplished quite a bit so far so I'm sure you will figure out how best to reach your goals. Congratulations on retirement!

I agree! You have done great, as for weight and diabetes it's all about those darn carbs! Lower your carbs to 20 or below this will make your body use your stored fat for energy instead of the food you just ate. I'm no doctor I just knows what works for me, so I'm sharing with anyone that cares to listen. Before I realized this my fasting blood sugars were over 130 for the past month they are 70-74. Good luck!

Those cholesterol lowering meds will kill you. Just start eliminating carbs like crazy. This is what actually causes artery build up. Also read The Big Fat Surprise! It will make you mad as help but armed with immense knowledge and way ahead of conventional medical doctors. Some doctors are starting to turn away from the old food pyramid but they're still hard to find. Best of luck to you.

A couple of GREAT reads: Dr bernstein's Book on The Diabetes Solution and Jenny Ruhl Blood Sugar 101. Both are grounded in fact and science and have way more knowledge than your avg physician. I recently have lowered my cholesterol meds on the advice of a couple of docs regarding their side effects. So be sure you make the best decision you can based on the facts and your personal situation

Check out VirtaHealth.com/blog They are showing success with LCHF diets for T2D. The Drs Phinney and Volek are the ones who wrote "New Atkins for a New You".

I have Dr Bernstein's book and love it. Very detailed but still simple. I noticed I was having trouble when I started using almond flour and most artificial sweeteners. My system simply can't handle it right now. I think I've messed with my system for so long that it is going to take a long while to get it back to a place of balance and healing. Keep in mind that Drs work from clearly defined protocols that have little to nothing to do with you as an individual. Unfortunately, a lot of the DM protocols were developed from faulty information. I still can't believe most Dr's still recommend high carb low fat diets even when the independent scientific studies don't support that plan. Be sure to do lots of research before starting any med so that you know what you are getting into and are comfortable with the possible outcomes.

Thanks everyone for all the kind word and encouragement, I really appreciate it. I think we should start a campaign to go back to "buddies" instead of followers. That's really how I think of all of you. :-)

Oh gosh, please consider trying nutrition before cholesterol meds. My partner managed a turn-around (following type-2 diabetes diagnosis, as well as crazy-high cholesterol) so dramatic that it worried their doctor. Docs almost never see patients do that, so their first thought is that you have some wasting disease! --- And, I hate to be a killjoy, but "keto" baking using sweeteners seems to be a downfall of a lot of people. Even if they don't affect your blood sugar, it keeps your brain oriented to sweets as a treat, and keeps your perceptions of subtle sweetness and other flavors dull. The sweeteners can also be detrimental to gut health. --- I'm not on a crusade against baking overall. I do make keto pizza crust, but with shirataki noodles and flax-seed, not with almond flour and cheese or whatever the classic recipes are. Mine's lower total carb than the cauliflower stuff is, as well.

With the "sugars", always assume that if it TASTES sweet that the body will react the same way as with real sugar... try that for a little bit, everybody reacts differently.

Keto Christina on youtube has a video "8 beginner mistakes on keto" in which she explains problems with keto baking. --- My partner dropped all carbs in November 2015, and didn't touch anything off-plan during the holidays, even when I was baking for cookie swaps. Once I saw their progress, I followed suit ...before Christmas. There's so much to enjoy about holidays other than sweets. Sometimes it takes dropping the default celebration items in order to make space for non-food enjoyment, and the transition can feel a little bleak. But it's your health at stake here.

If you haven't read the book "Cholesterol Clarity" by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman, you might want to check it out. Your cholesterol will be way high for a bit on keto, but the numbers are skewed because of most doctors not doing a particle test to see if you have the big fluffy particles (good) or small tiny particles (not good). It may help comfort some anxiety about your current results and the direction to take from there. Keep your chin up, you can do this!
