Im wondering if anyone else had any adverse GI reactions to going onto Keto, or if maybe I just did too drastic a change too fast. I went from one day having carbs and protein ruling my diet to having fat ruling it. Friday was my first full day which makes today day five. I've been having diarrhea, stomach cramps and today I have no appetite and just feel plain gross. I had to choke down breakfast since my blood sugar was getting low but have decided to skip lunch in favour of a small snack. Any advice or ideas?

***Side note:
I've decided to strictly follow my Keto diet and then weigh myself next Monday or Tuesday morning when I get home (I'm a nanny and since my car is in the shop getting repairs I'm staying in the guest bedroom and then I'm on call over the weekend, which means I'll be sleeping here then as well).

It's called "keto flu" and it can last from a week to two. It's normal as your body adapts to a new fuel source. Drink a lot of water, maybe take some potassium supplements and make sure you're getting plenty of salt in your diet.

Keto flu is often from loss of water as you breakdown your glycogen, as well as electrolyte losses. Take a supplement of potassium and magnesium. There are some drops of minerals that you can add to water. Find that at a vitamin shop.

My first month was miserable - everyone is different and some people feel okay after a week. but I was wolfing down carbs and eating 6-8 times day and then boom I cut half calories and carbs went to 60 and under. My body was going wacky.

I had digestive troubles with MCT oil - rumbly tummy, loose stools.

If it were me, I'd ask my doctor is a high fat diet is okay for you. So many people have different health issues and the same diet isn't right for everyone. My doctor specifically told me NOT to do a high fat diet. I just think for health purposes it's a good idea to let your doctor know what you are doing and ask for his/her guidance.

I've always had stomach problems, but a high fat diet does cause a few more. I just don't think my intestines know what to do with the fat so they kind of pass it on through. Its been a few days since I started and I'm already starting to feel better.

I pushed through that, I had the exact same problem which almost made me quit. I just kept making myself eat keto and I'm finally at a point where I don't feel like I just binged on a lot of McDonald's or something. You can do it!!

I will also recommend propel water, they helped a lot as well to replenish electrolytes and to replace not keto flavored drinks

You should start out slow as you are putting your body into shock, and the body is not use to the sudden impact..Slowly diminish the carbs to except able levels over time as maybe a month as not to make yourself sick . You may also use your own body fat stores as body fat deficit as a way of not adding so much fat at first !!! then ease into it as you loose weight, it is worth a try..Good Luck

Yes, I had some adverse reactions - noise, gas and slight cramping (not a word from you, @T8U9). Took my body about a week to normalize. Now, if it continues to be a bother you may want to treat the symptoms with over-the-counter medicines or consult an Internist.

Thanks, that's all good advice! I actually work for one of my doctors so I'll have to talk to her about it if it persists

It takes time for your gall bladder to adjust to that much fat. At one point, I was so sick I couldn't touch dinner. Slept for an hour on the sofa, woke up and read kind advice people here had shared in response to my moans, got up and went grocery and supplements shopping. Probiotics beverages, flaxseed crackers, potassium, shirataki noodles, bone broth, raw sauerkraut, and a few other items turned that weekend around. --- Apparently there's something called NoSalt which is the best price for potassium supplement. --- What macros are you using?

My first few days I felt stuffed, but it evened out after that. Hang in there!

Sounds pretty terrible for a diet that offers no fat loss advantage besides the fact that your food options are cut to about one-third of a normal diet. When protein and calories are equated, it does not matter what macronutrient you take in for the rest of your calories. Carbs are tasty and a more efficient energy source than fat.

Keto adaptation takes 4 to 6 weeks. During that time, kidneys and muscles are adapting, you go from excreting ketones to using them as fuel. At the start of LC/keto, kidneys flush out salt and adding sodium will help avoid lightheadedness, fatigue, and constipation. You also need to pay attention to your omega-3 and omega-6 balance. Too much polyunsaturated fats can cause digestive distress. Make sure you get butter, animal fats, fish oil, and olive oil, and reduce corn and soybean oils.

My doctor IGNORED my abnormal / high A1c, triglycerides, and cholesterol, even when I tried to discuss my weight problem with her. For over 30 years, doctors have been advising low fat diets, do now we have an epidemic of obesity. I trust science and my body's fat losses on LC / keto; my doctor? Not so much . . .
