I'm in hospital, been in for the past few days. This is a sequel to the major illness -- almost to death -- that I had in the summer of 2010. This time, it started out as what seemed to be an intestinal blockage caused by apple skins, of all things. Except that after the blockage seemed to clear, and I was initially discharged, the intense pain did not go away; So back in I went. Now I'm on NPO -- Nil By Mouth in my native speech. For the past few days I've been on nothing but a saline drip (except for one meal on Wednesday). The results have been interesting -- but not ones I wish to describe. I'm now getting some real nutrition, geared, the nurse tells me to the analysis of my bloodwork.

I'm very lucky to have a wife who loves me, an ex who worries about us both, sons who care about me, colleagues who are ready to jump in, and friends who have said some very nice things about me and my work. For me, in the end, these are what matter.
