It just seems like every time I review my diet, I can't eat some of my favourite foods. At this rate I think I will be forced to eat like a vegetarian. Damn it, I'm an omnivore! I love my meat.

Lol, no, I'm not allergic to food, in fact it's quite the opposite. I have a tendency to over eat (or at least that is what I have been doing up till just recently). I've been told to cut back on carbs, really cut back. But I don't eat a lot of carbs to start with.

Oh dear. Im glad you still have your brains. They are kind of essential...sorry to hear about your diet disappointments. I wish oh i wish a Magnum was on my list I instead of a big salad with no dressing....

Alexander. I have been a low-carb 'guiding light' for a lot of people now, friends, friends of friends and so on. Not here, because no-one will listen, but that's another story :) I have heard people say that they eat few carbs now so many times, that I have lost count. They say it in all sincerity. They are not lying or being deceptive. They are just always wrong. Ok, you might be the exception, but in my experience, when you eat low carb, and high fat, you lose weight. If it is was just me, you could say I was a freak, thing is, it is me, and the dozens of people I have put onto this way of eating, and the ones they in turn have put on to it. If you listen to a dietician, you will GAIN weight. Forget the dietician, just join a low carb group, and watch the weight disappear AND the energy levels rise, and the blood markers improve. A dietician HAS NO IDEA how our bodies work. They are stuck in the dogma of calories in calories out and low fat nonsense. Ask 95% of failed dieters how well this idea works. If you eat low carb, it is almost impossible to overeat, if only because you are so full! Anyway, try it, you have nothing to lose but weight :)

Biggergus, I kinda had that feeling as my wife had studied nutrition years ago and understands how it all works, whereas I'm more like... what does my body feel like eating now... My problem is that I'm on six medications per day, and I know it's not doing me any good. This is why I need to drop about 20 to 30 kgs. I will have a look and probably join one of those low carb groups.

mrs.vis, shhhhhh, don't tell anybody about my brains, they'll all want some... and I agree, a Magnum should be on the diet instead of salad...

With the greatest respect to your wife, when she studied nutrition years ago, the ones teaching her had no more idea of how it 'really' works, than they do now. I eat a diet that consists of 70% fat, yet I get thinnner. That diet looks nothing like you imagine it to, I promise :) I eat 12 to 13 thouosand kj a day, yet I get thinner. My bloods are better than perfect. I am no longer a diabetic by any measurable standards. Common nutritional dogma cannot explain this. According to them, I should be fat and sick, when in truth, at 60, I am fitter, thinner, stonger, and generally better, then I have ever been at ANY time in my life. Eat properly (which means something VERY different to what your wife thinks :)) and you will lose your 30 kgs, AND the meds, AND pretty much everything else that is wrong with you. It is pretty simple really. Forget counting calories, that is nonsense. Forget low fat, more nonsense. Just lose ALL grains, all sugars, all starches. Eat lots of fat, cheese, full fat yoghurt, meat, chicken, eggs, nuts and seeds. Eat lots of salad and veg. Avoid like the plague all man made oils. Stick to olive oils and coconut oil. No grain, no sugar, no man made oils ... no problem :) That's about it. Join a low carb group, read the books by Nina Teicholz and Gary Taubes, or Mark Sisson if you want the short version :) FWIW, you can drink champers, calories don't matter! Only carbs do. Biggergus, I am doing LCHF as well. It is great. 3 months, down 7.2kg and feeling fantastic. Still have more to go, but it is so easy after the first week. Alexander, also try www.dietdoctor.com It has a menu, recipes, shopping list and a two week challenge that is all free. You will be surprised how brilliantly your body will respond to it. :)

No, small pieces of 70% or higher are ok, but need to be included in your 20g of carbs each day.
