Don't you just love it when you FINALLY have had enough, you FINALLY are ready for a change, you FINALLY think you've found a system that will work for long-term change and your best friend craps all over it?

I got told today (by a woman easily 50-60 lbs heavier than me) That counting calories "never works" that i should follow this diet or that diet, that whole wheat bread is a no no and I should eliminate sugar entirely.

I'm sorry...what? What I WANTED to say was "because that's working so well for you?" or "Okay, you can pay for me to do Jenny Craig thanks!"

What I said was "well Ive tried everything else, so I'm going to give calorie counting and portion control a shot."

Its just NOT realistic for me to eliminate sugar altogether. I mean come on! My family calls me cookie monster because I have never met a chocolate chip cookie i couldn't be BFFs with! I have tried these extreme changes and I ALWAYS FAIL. I hate not having the support!

Shes also been doing a lot of "skinny shaming" recently... posting memes about how women who fit in a size zero aren't "real." "Oh I am sorry I can't shop in those places, I actually eat!!!"

Im starting to wonder if all this will get directed at me now. Is this what I have to look forward to if I lose the weight?

It's great that you realize your boundries, finding a plan that fits what you're comfortable eating shoulden't be too difficult. Eat below maintainance calories and you WILL lose weight.

Sounds like you're having some heavy exposure to a toxic person. It's funny how you can never be OK enough for some people. Too fat, too thin bla bla. If you step back you'll realize she's dealing with her own issues about body image. Let her have them! They don't have anything to do with you.

Yes you might have that to look forward to - but at least you'll see it coming and have a chance to prepare for it. She sounds like a saboteur to me. I personally find that cutting calories does work, but cut them too low and it's not sustainable. It may take some experimenting to find that happy medium between losing some weight without feeling like I'm starving. For me that number seems to be 1300 calories a day; your number may be different. Use the tracker on FatSecret to find your number. Btw, I know what you mean about sugar/carbs. LCHF is real popular on this site, but it's nothing I could ever do - I like my cereal in the morning, and my chocolate in the afternoon. Of course, I can't expect to eat all the chocolate I want & lose weight, but there's a difference between cutting & totally eliminating, isn't there? Anyway, good luck and ignore that co-worker.

If you two have been "unhealthy together BFs" it could be hard for her to see you successful. Especially using such a simple technique! Let her go on her rants. You stick rio your funds. Maybe tell her that something you might try if you hit a plateau. She then feels validated and you can go on counting your cookies intoa balanced diet.

Everything is realistic if you believe in yourself. You dont have to give up sugar FOREVER. I did a whole 30 where I couldnt not have ANY added sugar. My tastebuds have changed so much. I can't even drink bottled iced teas from the store without gagging. I dont add any sugar in my coffee or tea- I just add a splash of almond milk. Only time I really have "sugar" is in the form of honey or maple syrup when I make making a particular recipe. I actually made regular cookies this weekend from a recipe I used to use before I went paleo. I made them for 4th of july...and they were so sweet I could barely eat 1. So It is possible to change your sugar habits. You just have to WANT to change them

I will say do what works for you. Regardless of what you decide, there will be nay-sayers, simply because some people will insist that their way is the best way. My attitude is that my body and my scale will tell me what is working for me, and if it does not work I will try another way. Giving up is not an option because my health, and probably my life, is at stake.

Counting calories has made me lose 41 lbs. It does work. Do what you can handle and live with. Every single time I do low carb I fail and sometimes I fail really bad. Good luck!!!!!!!

It's hard for sure. It's not easy. Ppl look at me like I'm from another planet sometimes, my family mainly! Just bc I am doing something they wish they could I think. But they don't. My mother is on here and she is trying new things and I think that's great but I wouldn't tell her exactly what I did bc she's not me :-) I really do have to ignore others and just make sure that I am healthy. It is sad most times but I'm over it and just think of myself. Fs is great for my self esteem!

man! that's harsh! you do what works for you! ... I don't talk to my friends about my dieting as its never well received. .... just let your losses speak for themselves... you will lose weight and laugh all the way to the store to get smaller sizes.... and then you can give her your "fat" clothes and say they are far to big for you but you though she might like them

When overweight people see someone who is losing weight, they get jealous. I've had the same happen to me. Sooner or later she will run out of excuses and come to you for advise. In the meantime...ignore her.

All things in moderation. Who wants to live in a world without the occasional bread and chocolate chip cookie? Also, know-it-alls are huge jokes. Usually, the people who speak loudest on a topic are the ones who know the least about it. People who are actually knowledgeable rarely feel the need to educate everyone else all the time. Don't let her nonsense get to you. Be positive, do it for yourself, and enjoy your life! Good luck!

@Brydenbabe22........This is an example of someone trying to make her issues your issues. I've been thin and I've been fat and someone somewhere will want to pick you apart. That's how it is unfortunately. Sounds like she really, really needs to address her issues instead of worrying about you. Next time she starts with this nonsense just tell her "Thanks for your concern, but I got this." Then say "Do you want my weight loss tips?" Oh, yeah.........like 8hunter6 said, bag all your old clothes up and give them to her. I hate the passive-aggressive route, but she deserves it. You have a lot of positive things to look forward to once the weight is off. The #1 thing will be better health.

Thanks all, i'm feeling a bit better :) I'm just so bummed because she and I are so close and I cant imagine dismissing her like she did to me today :( I don't want to change my sugar habits lol, (Cookie monster for eva!) But I don't want my sweet tooth to control me anymore either. I need to be able to eat the things I love without acting like garfield the cat with lasagna! I think you are right trakin64, she is projecting her own stuff onto me but I don't have to let it ruin my momentum. Thanks to all for the encouragement! I got this. I am full and happy and under my RDI for today. (and I had a little 100 calorie pack of cookies after supper!)

This cookie thing is funny. U know u have a "problem" w cookies so u work them into your plan, that's the secret ;-) have u ever tried baking alternatives? And, what do u do, just have one or two now, where before, you would have a lot? Get healthy girl, if she's your true bestie she will join the ride! It's so mental. Something has to click in yourself to DO IT! At least that's what happened to me anyway.

stick with us here... "real life" people get jealous. ... this has happened to many of us and it hurts and sucks... just come here more often.. when you feel down, if you struggle, if you need reassurance. ... I don't know why the people closest to us get so threatened but it happens.... and that's why we are here for you.
