Hi! Hello! I'm back :) Well, I had a increase this week. I'm hoping and praying that it is from all of the exercise and weight training I did through the week. I try not to be discouraged but any increase, even a small one gives me one of those 'run for the cookie jar' kind of feelings. It totally makes me want to give up even though I have a reasonable explanation for it. It bites because you want to tone as you lose but everyone knows that muscle weighs more than fat. So that's a real bummer ya know. I participated in a fitbit challenge also. That helped me to be more motivated to exercise but I also found that my cravings were a heck of a lot harder to resist. So what are your thoughts? Lose then tone or try to maintain both at the same time and ignore the scale?

Hi Diva!! Good to see my buddy is back! I suppose it's supposed to go hand in hand, I read this article that clearly says if you have to choose 1- either cardio or weight lifting to lose weight, choose weight lifting because building the muscle will metabolize food much quicker which leads to a calorie deficit... As for me, I just want to lose first.. Then worry about the toning!! Haha!! But that's just me!

Hey there, often the muscles will hold extra water in the repair mode after weight work. GOOGLE an article titled, "Why the Scale Lies" and you can lean about fluctuations, hang with it - you are doing well.

I have heard it said and I happen to believe that losing weight is 80% diet and that too much exercise can actually stall weight loss because it raises cortisol levels I do believe that a good diet with real food and moving not necessarily in the gym will result in you being able to have your cake and eat it too

Thanks for all of the comments and advice! I'm going to read that article HCB because I swear my body feels smaller and my tummy is definitely flatter but that darn scale is making me unhappy :(...it doesn't help though that I know that I ate far more calories than I usually do so I think I'm playing mind games on myself and need to regain my focus. Happy Monday everyone!

My guess is that it is water weight and muscle. I looked at you intake and calorie burn and you are doing well. My suggestion is to weight yourself more often so that you can see the trend you are setting. I think you weighed yourself on an up day. Over all you are doing well. Keep up the good work!

Thanks @John10251. I've been shy about stepping back on the scale. I actually put that bad boy outside in the garage :) I'll weigh myself tomorrow morning and see what happens.

Take it from someone who has been there and often you can't Rely on what the scale says because it can change in a matter of minutes one of the better things to suggest and I wish someone had turned me on to that in the very beginning if you want to get a tape measure and you want to take measurements of a lot of times you are losing inches as opposed to pounds and despite what you read a calorie is not a calorie so you can't depend on the bathroom scales to tell you what your body is really doing if your clothes are feeling better or loser you're losing weight and yes even if you work out and you gain muscle you might still be losing weight or gaining weight because muscle actually weighs more than fat

Hey Diva, echoing HCB's post above...there is an old post here on FS that has the article "Why The Scales Can Lie", I bumped it about 4 days ago for someone else who was a little concerned about unexpected weight gain...its worth the time to read for anyone, no matter where they are on the weight loss journey, even if you're in maintenance, hope this helps!!
