As I really get back into monitoring my diet and recording my food, I'm trying to figure out how I managed to live eating under about 1400 calories per day -- and yet I know I did for long periods of time. But I just can't seem to do that anymore. I get hungry.... and it's not like I was ever a big snacker. But if I do not eat 3 meals and 2 snacks every day, I'm hungry. I look at my food diary, and I'm doing really well with a balance of protein and carbs and fiber -- so my nutrition picture is good. But here it is around 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, and I'm hungry. Going to have some oatmeal with blueberries and a little milk....

i had the same issue. until i started keeping track, i would eat 3 meals and 2 or 3 snacks. it's been months. you need to slowly eat less. when i first got back into it i was completely starving all the time and would go over my daily limit. now seriously, I eat anything. I'm usually under 800-900 calories BUT. I'm a VERY small person who is not really active due to spine issues and migraines, so even though I'm supposed to be at 1200 calories, I'm just not hungry. i get plenty of protein and vitamins, though so keep at it. it takes a while to get used to again.

Dee Dee Fen2 -- it would never been my goal to eat 8-900 calories per day. That would not be healthy for me. I'm sorry you have health problems that keep you from activity -- I'm not what I would call "extremely active" -- but when I do monitor my activity, I'm usually burning 2400 or more calories per day, so I should be able to lose weight on 1400 per day.

Oh! I wouldn't expect anytime to eat 800-900. I'm just i do , but it's because I'm a small person and inactive.... for the most part .. if I'm about to do more I'll almost hit the 1200. I was just saying for me. Because people tend to look at it like i have an eating disorder, but i don't. Either way, you can do this! Just ease into it and you'll be less hungry. I had to cut down a tiny bit at a time.

I hear you . Going at this again in adding in my meals and even ahead of time so I can have someone premade as a reference so I stay with in my desired calorie intake.

lzbhcruzcastro-- I do the same thing. I sometimes try to plan my meals the day before, especially if I know I am going out for a meal on a particular day. I'm trying to adjust my meals so that I'm not totally thrown off track by a restaurant meal. In some ways, the pandemic has helped me out. We went so long without being able to go out to restaurants, that I'm still not likely to go to a restaurant very often, and when I do go, it's to eat something I really want, not to have yet another grilled chicken breast. If I eat out I want lasagna or chocolate cake or something equally evil, and I realize that in the long run, it's better to eat what I really want when I go out, so long as it doesn't become a regular thing! I'm certainly not going to go the rest of my life without every eating anything evil.

Sheltie -- if I tried to live on 1400 calories, I would get so hungry I'd eat the formica off the counters 🤣 Sounds like you have a balanced approach -- lasagna and chocolate cake are great treats here and there! It's really about what you eat 95% of the time, not the 5%

writingwyo -- I'm trying to stay under 1500 per day by spreading my calories out across the day. I definitely need my mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. And I'm also trying to get my fiber up above 20 grams each day -- closer to 30 if possible. I'm accomplishing that with the help of oatmeal and barley instead of rice and potatoes, plus trying to fill up 3/4 of my plate with veg and/or fruit. I need to work really hard the next 6 weeks. I leave for Barcelona on 9-16, and I know I will not be dieting there. All people do there is eat and walk and eat some more, nearly always including dessert. The food is so good...

Hope it works well for you! I've got more calories to play with (1800) than you do, but I try to keep my fiber above 40 at the minimum, and usually average about 50ish. If you really want a fiber bump, you might look at blackberries, raspberries, and chia seeds 😊

And roasted edamame for a snack -- not just high in fiber, but also in protein

I took a quick look at your food diary. It looks pretty good. You could lessen your carbs to about 125/135 and up your fiber - switch out the breads, bagels, and added sugar yogurt for a lot more veggies, small portion of sweet potatoes or wild rice, and some protein. This should help a lot with the hunger, as the extra fiber will facilitate slower digestion.

outerlimit -- Thanks for the advice. I really do appreciate your thoughtfulness, and I'm well aware of your recommended changes can lower carbs. Tut honestly, it's not the way I want to eat. I only eat bread a couple days per week, and the limit to one slice. I have tried out doing my yogurt shake with plain yogurt + instant coffee + 1 tsp of sugar, which is less than the pre-flavored yogurt, and you know what: It doesn't taste good. But the biggest issue is that I have kidney disease. That means that some foods that would seem to be healthy for others, might not be good additions for me. Wild rice and sweet potatoes are among these foods to be careful of because of high phosphorus and potassium levels. Indeed, even white potatoes are a problem; the nurse practitioner called me after my last blood panel and said: Did you eat a bunch of potatoes last week? I said, well yes, I had a nice baked organic russet. She said -- oh no, don't do that again right before bloodwork. You can eat a potato now and then, but when you eat one right before a blood panel, it will bump up your blood potassium levels, and that will confuse us. Similarly, raising protein is not a good idea -- seriously, I think I'm balancing things well. I am going to continue to try to increase my veggie consumption to raise fiber and lower carbs, but that's about all I can do. My new favorite thing is air fryer cauliflower -- I hope it doesn't turn out there's some reason why cauliflower isn't good for my kidneys!

writingwyo -- Thanks for the reminder about berries. I have just launched a new effort to make fruit salad every day with berries and peaches and watermelon chunks. Edamame for snacks is a "no" -- they are very high oxalate, so risk for kidney stones...

Sheltie Mom— are you on dialysis yet or is the kidney diet just becoming more ridged? Are you new to the kidney diet? Do not take the admonition regarding potassium (K) lightly. It is mega serious business. Two things that can kill you real fast, one is a high potassium and the other is a low potassium. Humans actually walk a fairly slim line on what is normal.

Kenna Morton -- Oh no! I am nowhere near needing dialysis! In fact, my nephrologist said my kidneys should function until I'm 90. I told him I was good with that, since probably my retirement fund won't last past 90. My labs were good enough this time around that the neprologist didn't need to meet with me -- I'm meeting tomorrow with the nephrology NP. The only absolute no-no they've given me is no cola beverages, which is no problem since I haven't had any for about 40 years. They said my occasional root beer float in the summer was fine. I love dairy -- so I am very conscious of other sources of potassium, so that I can still have my yogurt and skim milk and cheese. And so far -- other than that one lab blip last year after I ate two baked potatoes in a week, everything has been just fine. So I am avoiding potatoes, sweet potatoes and the orange squashes so that I can have dairy without a potassium problem. When I was first diagnosed, I asked about sodium, and the nephrologist told me I don't have a sodium problem and, in fact, I take 2 sodium bicarb pills per day which apparently have something to do with neutralizing acid going through the kidneys. I'm doing fine... but I'm trying to eat more and more of my calories in high-fiber veg and control my protein intake. Thank you so much for your concern.
