So I stumbled upon this "dietdoctor" website, which is mostly about Keto, low carb dieting etc.
I never tried a low carb diet since I always found it difficult and very time consuming. I mean, as an overweight student with a very limited income, it's already hard to keep up with a healthy eating / exercising regimen, not to mention the money, cooking and the time required to achieve that.
What I read in the dietdoctor and got my attention though, is the following tip : "Women should avoid fruits".
The article was stating that fruits contain lots of sugar (even if it's fructose, no big difference - still a carb, still "bad" for your weight loss goals) so if you're going low carb, you shouldn't consume regularly fruits, you can only enjoy them as a special treat. Same goes with dairy products which contain lactose (still a form of sugar).

Aaand this is where I got confused.

The main [eternal] reason for screwing up my diet is sweet cravings and snacking. I don't care about eating 2 steaks, pizza, fries or whatever, but I simply can't stay away from sweets. So in order to satisfy my sweet tooth, I eat lots of fruits(min. 3-4 pieces per day) and dairy products (1 portion of low fat milk and 1 of yoghurt per day).
Also, I often notice that I'm exceeding my daily carb intake and now I'm really concerned whether my diet is wrong or not.

Help?!?

All carbs, including fruit, start turning into sugar as soon as it hits the tounge. You're body doesn't know the difference between one Carb or the other. Cheese? Some people tolerate it, some don't. Expensive? Not really. The less carbs you eat, the less exercise you need. Goodbye gym membership! Also, when you get into ketosis your hunger and cravings diminish. So, the food is more expensive, but you naturally eat less.

Time consuming? Not really (Only until you learn how many carbs in your favorites). It's a lot easier to count to 20 carbs in your head than it is to log everything you est every day to count calories. Love diet doctor! That site is full of my heros!

I eat low carb. It has worked wonderful for me. I do not eat fruit. I find when I eat fruit I crave more sweets. For me it is better to avoid the cravings altogether.

You're likely to get varied advice here. Mine would be this - you need to find a way of life, a way of eating that works for you and lets you achieve your goals and also be sustainable for YOU. You can be successful in doing that following a variety of eating plans. Fruit can be part of healthy eating and living, it's not "bad", but it needs to be in balance and if you're doing low carb it needs to be very limited or possibly eliminated depending on how low carb you go. No matter what it's important to control sweets, you'll have a hard time losing weight eating sugar or lots of refined carbs. I can't sustain low carb high fat for very long, doesn't work for me, so I do something different and that has worked very well for me. What works for you, that achieves results for you in a healthy way, in my opinion is what you should do.

If you want to stop the sweet tooth, under 20 carbs a day is the way to go. There is a course on the dietdoctor (sugar addition) that explains that sugar is a drug, and should be quit cold turkey to stop cravings just like with any other drug. Good luck with your journey & finding what works for you!

first of all, thank you guys! I will do some research about low carb, maybe it's not that difficult after all. And if it works for so many people, I could give it a try as well. Sustainable is the key word, well said jmb3450. Sustainable and balanced, I don't wanna mess my metabolism or put my health at any risk. I want to eliminate sugar though, it's addictive and dangerous, I'm aware of it, so I will definitely re-examine my diet and try to improve it as much as I can, taking my lifestyle and eating habits into consideration. Thanks once again!
