Last Tuesday, in anticipation of Christmas, I treated myself to a year worth of gym membership, with three months free :) so I can head there when it rains instead of it merely being a choice between getting soaked or staying home. Swimming is also included in the fee so, even though the swimming pool does look more like a bathtub than an actual pool, I can add swimming to my exercise routine.

Today however, it was dry so I went and ran. I haven't stopped running since graduating on the C25K but I was missing the structure of the podcast and wondering if there wasn't more I could do about my running as I dart about like a sedated snail.

So I downloaded the C25K+ podcasts and started on the one titled 'Stepping Stone' last Sunday, which is meant for graduates who want to improve their speed... So, unusually for me, I got to move my legs on the beat of the music and it felt like really hard work the first time. I don't normally listen to music when I run as I want to be able to hear, as well as see, vehicles and other pedestrians. I found that if I kept the volume as low as possible, I would still be able to monitor the trafic and keep out of the way of incoming cars.

The first time I ran to the podcast last Sunday, I really thought the beat was too fast and came close to give up a few times! I ran through the podcast but was mostly unable to keep to the tempo: I would invariably go back to a slower speed and then didn't bother altogether to keep up with the beat.

This morning saw me running to the same podcast for the second time: while I was better at keeping to the tempo for the first 20 minutes, I got too knackered over the last 10 minutes to move my feet to the very fast beat. I completed the run at a slower speed than the one imposed by the music.

Needless to say I felt more tired than usual, having been forced to stick to a faster tempo of running but there was a definite improvement compared to the first time since I managed to follow the beat for the first twenty minutes instead of none at all on the first run. I will stick to it for a few more runs and see how it goes, before moving on to the podcasts 'SPEED' and 'STAMINA' which do sound like they're going to be challenging as well :D

I fancied some baozis (steamed buns) for lunch today but my partner didn't like his and I had no qualm whatsoever in eating it in addition to mine, as I dislike throwing food away... besides, there was no nutrition info on the package other than the actual composition so I have no idea of the amount of calories the buns contained. I think I will have to forego dinner if I want to stay within the calorie limit.

I miss swimming. It's so good for joint health and relaxation. Nearest pool here is 40 miles. Good to have the membership. Get a schedule going. My gym is in my basement. I have no excuses.

While running is healthy and cost-efficient, swimming is better for the joints and gives a good workout to all the muscles in the body. I hope it will allow me to lose more weight and make me a more efficient runner. It's so cool you have your gym at home! :D

Swimming is a great all-around exercise. As for the buns, doesn't no nutrition label mean there are no calories?? :)

I have no doubt that swimming will result in the benefits you've mentioned . . . as for the running: I'm not that familiar with C25K (just the overall concept of the program) but seems odd that the Stepping Stone program appears to take a rather 'significant' step forward in pacing. I'm certainly NO expert, but have heard/read from many sources that 'interval' training (running a minute or two at a noticeably faster pace, followed by a few minutes at normal/slower pace) is a good way to build speed (and endurance).

I love swimming,, but its really hard , as a past Triathlete I trained in swimming, biking and running and I would skip the swim anytime. Some make it look so easy but it certainly is not my Forte ! But it is a great workout,,, definitely take advantage of that pool . Good for you !

Losinit1655: I am just a slow runner (a lot of people are when they start) so it's not surprising I am finding it challenging to run faster. These follow up podcasts are meant to build up speed and stamina for C25K graduates.

jmb3450: I am pretty sure these buns contain calories even though they're not mentioned on the package :D I looked for a similar variety online and added the nutrition info here to give me some idea. Tamarah Jo: Do you mean as a triathlete, you must swim, cycle and run during the same session? If this is the case, it must be very tiring indeed!

Thanks for sharing ZZG, music works for me too when I want to do endurance training at a high tempo. Take care and have a great Christmas!!

I am not sure I actually enjoy listening to music while I'm running to be honest: I prefer talk shows these days on the radio and I listen to that in the gym, in preference to music. But I suppose the music is great to built up speed. Have a great Christmas too :D

Hey thanks for clarifying your listening choice ZZG, my bad...didn't read your post carefully enough. I have some spoken podcasts that I'll try out on my next ski tour. Thanks for being gracious.

Awesome!! Good Job Buddy!. Your a better man than I am. A gym just bores the heck out of me. Congrats on that purchase! Pulling for you all the way.
