My primary care doctor's office just called and asked if I had a few minutes to go over the knee MRI done yesterday. I had to go get paper and a pen! They said there is a meniscus tear, floating cartilage and arthritis. They recommended I see the orthopedist they referred me to. I told them I saw him last Friday. And to think I wanted to cancel the MRI because the knee felt so much better and I expected to hear there is nothing wrong so stop whining (my doctor really wouldn't say that!). Have to go and Google "floating cartilage"

Deep breath you will find out what happens when you get your appointment. You have a diagnosis and that is step 1. This will help you move forward which is the goal here

Thanks Broccolibabe, Dr Google is what I've doing. I have a couple sites I usually go to, Mayo Clinic (years ago I got a monthly newsletter from them), WebMD sometimes. There are lots of Orthopedic Centers with information. But you are right, I need to wait and see what the doctor says!

Thanks JoeinHouston, not sure a 2nd opinion in my area, which is rural with a nice hospital but not so many specialists. However my knee is so much better than when the issue first happened. I never had any knee problems except minor pain or something after hiking. But on October 30th I woke up and could put no weight on the knee. That lasted 2 weeks and I wonder if I injured the knee more with my limping. Really had no idea of how to limp when one leg couldn't handle the weight. After lots of rest my knee is much better. I can walk without limping. No longer get the throbbing pain. After taking the dog for a walk it seems like the pain gets worse. I plan on moving to Oregon in a few months. My new house (if it ever gets built) has no steps and will be easier to move around in. I've checked and there are orthopedists nearby. That may be where I get a 2nd opinion.

Thanks Diana, I've gone from panicking to calming down just overnight.

Thanks gv013060, this is all new to me so hopefully I can take it one step at a time. I've been working on weight loss because of how it impacts joints and bones. For most of my problems I read that weight loss is recommended. It just takes awhile.

Thanks attygirl, I am expecting the orthopedist will send me to physical therapy before anything else. It's good to hear what you have been able to accomplish without surgery!

Thanks arfrogs sorry to hear about your experience with knee replacement. My brother in law had it a couple years ago and is very happy with the results. I really, really hope my problem doesn't get to that point.

Thanks Liv, I do need to take this one step at a time and not get ahead of myself.

floating cartilage can cause intermittent problems for years. i eventually had a scope to remove it. 10 years later knee replacement for the arthritis. each persons journey is different. get a second opinion from a different clinic if your Insurance will cover.

I have changed my diet to minimize inflammatory foods. This reduces the amount of acid in my blood. I focus on carbs and sugar and corn syrup. sometimes that doesn't leave a lot.

I had a torn meniscus and arthritis and had a scope to repair the meniscus and had to walk up 18 steps to get in my apartment at the time was only down about 2weeks and then was fine for awhile until I retore it again and the arthritis got way worse and I had become almost immobile from 2017 surgery until last year and Dr said loose weight before he would attempt to do surgery and then once I lost weight I had to get another xray done and x-rays do show up a torn meniscus tear but they usually do mri to confirm it after the xray. my last xray and mri in 2021 showed torn meniscus and arthritis even worse than before..this new xray shows up alot of bone spurs on each side of the knee and I have end stage degeneration in the knee from arthritis...I need surgery after all these years of trying cortisone shot and physical therapy and meds no relief I'm only standing up or walking around 3-4 min on that knee and the other knee is fine I can walk good on it..But even at end stage degeneration my surgeon said try cortisone shot most good surgeon won't rush straight into a knee replacement..but you may need a scope which isn't bad at all. I'm nervous about the knee replacement but I know it should help me greatly be able to walk around again...don't rush into knee replacement surgery unless you have too...My new surgeon did tell me that a meniscus tear will cause arthritis and the longer you have it the more arthritis it can cause not always but it can said it's very common for people who have a meniscus tear to have arthritis with it due to the tear not letting your knee properly work like it should...now I don't have any meniscus tear that's shown up but sometimes they do heal on their own and sometimes they don't it depend on how much it's tore and how big the tear is..but I have multiple bone spurs now that is worse and it's most likely from arthritis and the tear over the years..get a 2nd opinion tho I got 3 opinion in 2021 and everyone said something different except 2 dud say I had the meniscus tear again but one said my knee was out of line and kneecap was downward I never went back to him he was not a good opinion...after years of trying to get help I may be able to get the knee replacement surgery I need here soon I hope so anyway...note also a retore meniscus tear surgery is worse than the original scope and it is alot more downtime of 6-8weeks...

a meniscus could heal on its own it takes couple months but if it doesn't then that's when a scope is needed...
