Is there anyone here on the keto diet & understands the science behind building muscle that has any comments on this? https://youtu.be/BkyioIegzS8

I watched it, he talks so fast...too much coffee maybe? I did not fully understand his breakdown but it may just be that I am not well versed in lifting and workout terminology to comprehend what he was saying. We need input from the athletic guys/gals on that one!

got it ok. layman's breakdown 1- maintain insulin sensitivity AKA have carbs at specific times. Train fasted yet goes on to say to have 10 -15g of carbs before a workout. I say experiment with both methods.... if you workout and feel drained have carbs before next workout. (Personal experience after being a weight lifter for 13 years, I hate working out fasted. I feel like my insides are consuming me.) 2- Train hydrated but SUPER important to add Salt/electrolytes to water. He talks sciencey stuff long story short: salt is important for mineral balance in body. 3- stop focusing on SO much fat: boost protein percentage! muscles will thank you.. (personally I had great weight rapid loss on high protein, 50+% of daily calories. I switched to high carb unintentionally and ive maintained even with high cal) 4- experiment with up to 20g of carbs after working out to replenish glycogen in muscle. MUSCLE NEED CARBS. he keeps talking about carbs despite this being a ketogenic diet. if you exercise without any carbs your muscles will break down and you will not gain muscle. The trade-off for this is that body fat will increase. Thomas is explaining this in a super fancy way. He recommends combining glucose and fructose and salt. carbs convert to glycogen for muscles. so if you specifically get carbs post workout, there's a higher chance that your muscles will use these carbs and it should not get converted to body fat. He gives the example of a rice cake, an orange and salt. Don't become afraid of carbs where working out is concerned. trust me! 5-Essential Amino Acids you can probably buy this in a powder and add it to protein shake or something. I personally use proteolytic enzymes, they break protein down into their amino acid components. amino acids are what make protein...well protein. which is why it is so important for muscle growth and strengthening. my dad has tested this where he took a chunk of steak, opened up some capsules of proteolytic enzymes and some water and the steak was literally falling apart because it was breaking the steak down. crazy!!

a few apps to help get you started with exercises : 1-Hevy: has a community. it is free, with option to purchase, not necessary though. you can have up to four workout circuits. you can create a routine and you can search through exercises and sort exercises based on muscle groups that you want to focus on. they have arranged from body weight exercises all the way up to if you go to a gym like cable machines. it has a how-to on each exercise some have videos and some have photos of how to specifically do this exercise. it is a great way to learn and tailor routine to you!! I am on here! 2- FitOn: It is completely free with a great social environment. these ones have preloaded workouts by a trainer and a video you can watch very similarly to YouTube. I used to use this app religiously. however I had to replace a lot of exercises in the videos with ones that I could do with my back and knee limitations or take a rest and not do it at all. it is a great app to experiment with different types of exercise styles- ranging from everything, some of many examples....dance to kickboxing to yoga to body weight and weightlifting based exercises. my son will use this app more then me lately. 😂

YouTube-ing workouts is always an option too, however, I like apps to keep track of progress lol I get distracted on YouTube 😂

I am not keto or carnivore but did watch the video. Dazey recapped it well. He is essentially saying what many of the body builders/lifters on FS suggest for optimum muscle growth. Carbs before to fuel and protein after to heal. The caveat is he suggests how many carbs to fuel the workout but depending on how intense your workouts are one might think that number differs from person to person. I enjoyed the video. thanks!

Posting the link does not work on the app. So I'll comment without the link or title. Lol. You don't need carbs to gain. Don't over think.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. @Diana... The body can use 2 types of fuel for energy, carbs or fat. Most people are carb-adapted, which simply means their body's are used to using carbs for energy. When someone cuts carbs (the allowance varies from person to person) for a certain amounts of time (also varies), they start to produce ketones, which is known as being "in ketosis". This simply means that they are burning fat, but may not be able to use it efficiently for energy. This is a transitioning phase, which is tough for some people, especially when they are detoxing from sugar at the same time. After another certain period of time (again - varies) WITHOUT CHEATING AND GOING OUT OF KETOSIS, they become "keto-adapted". This means that their body is now using fat (from body and/or diet) efficiently for fuel, and carbs are no longer needed as an energy source. https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto#:~:text=When%20you%20eat%20far%20fewer,organs%20can%20use%20for%20energy.

@Diana... while there is much debate about how much protein & how often per day, we all agree protein should be consumed after a workout.

Robert Sikes is a Keto bodybuilder. His instagram https://www.instagram.com/ketosavage/?hl=en . I know there are a few others out there, I quickly scroll past, as I have no interest in muscles at all. Hope he can help.

@CarbAbuser... Thanks! I was just listening to him in an interview with Dr. Chaffee as a matter of fact. There are a few reasons that I want to gain muscle. 1- when I get older I don't want to have to go to a retirement home, simply because I have lost so much muscle that I can't care for myself. 2- IF I can replace some fat with muscle, that means less sagging skin. 3- I don't want to be skinny-fat. To each their own. Good luck with all of your goals! 🙂

Zenus, me too . My mom died from weakness and fell. There is a good 3rd reason! Increased matabolism! We can eat more with more muscle 💗🥩🥓 have you seen that woman who is a body builder in her 80s? Omg that's my goal! Ernestine Shepard. She started at age 56 She's amazing. I use to lift heavily. I'm getting back to it.
