Why is dieting so hard? I make one slip up (usually around day 3-4 of the week) and then I’m sliding down the mountain creating an avalanche of bad decisions.

Are you restricting too much to the point where it's unsustainable? If that's the case, you might need to ease up and be more patient. Or are you falling into an all or nothing mentality? If that's the case, the best analogy I've heard is that if you get a drip of ketchup on your shirt, you don't squirt the whole bottle on yourself. A slip doesn't have to be a complete derailment

Like it shouldn’t be that hard. Literally just don’t eat bad things….

@writing I may be restricting too much. Outside personal stress factor may play a part as well. I really hate making excuses.

writingwyo - that's a great analogy

I perhaps have a different perspective on food. I believe that no food is "bad," but that some foods are more nutritious than others, and that I need to take nutrition into account when I make food choices. I also believe that no, it shouldn't be constant deprivation because almost no one can keep that up indefinitely. Different strategies work for different people, but the goal is to find something you can sustain that doesn't make you miserable. For me, it's mostly plant-based, adequate protein, and a lot of fiber to fill up. Low carb is not an option for me, because I'd hate it, but I could go the rest of my life never having steak or bacon, and it wouldn't bother me. I don't feel deprived. Other people fill up better on protein and fats and couldn't conceive of minimizing or eliminating meat, because they'd hate it. You'll see a lot of dietvangelists on here who think they've found the ONE DIET TO RULE THEM ALL, but such a thing doesn't exist. You'll find your way, and if what you're doing isn't working, it may be the diet failing you instead of you failing the diet. I truly wish you all success 😊

Like writingwo, I think you have to find a sustainable "diet" that allows you enough of foods you like to keep you on the path to weight loss. I'm in maintenance now, but when I was losing, I limited some foods but didn't totally eliminate them. I created meals that were pretty low cal....fish or chicken with a lot of veggies & rotated them with a pizza day (controlled servings) or steak. It's helpful, I love veggies & fruits so I can make them a huge portion of my WOE. I also found some desserts that were lower calorie & had a planned dessert each night after dinner. That was my signal...kitchen is closed. When I went into maintenance , I had built a platform for healthier eating. I was able to add more food....a few more potatoes, pasta etc. & not blow it out of the water.

I just scrolled thru your journal. Looks like a lot of what you eat are good choices. Try to get the mindset when you eat higher cal foods that you just need to plan a day to balance that out. Don't beat yourself up. 😊

Try to have the mental mindset that food is fuel like gas for your car and not a pleasure or delight or something to reward yourself with. Once the mindset changes it all becomes easier. People that focus on the “taste” more than the “energy source” are always going to struggle.

I don't know if this applies to you, but lack of sleep usually leads to binge behavior. When I'm tired, I just want to eat, and because I'm tired I lack the will power to stop myself. Sleep well and weight loss becomes easier.

Writingwyo and Sherrye love your comments. I agree with you both. Reading your comments really helps motivate me to stay on this slow path to weight loss. Thanks!

recompforhealth -- sometimes food is more than fuel. You can retrain your palate, however, and learn new recipes to take delight in healthier choices

I heard someone say recently, if you keep falling off the wagon, it’s not your fault it’s just that your wagon is broken. It sounds like it’s time to fix your wagon or maybe find a new one altogether. As some others have said, if it’s not sustainable, it won’t work.

I have found lack of protein (be it plant based or dairy or muscle meats) will increase cravings. Especially when I have sugar cravings. I check my protein consumed for the last two days and its less than my doctor recommended 80 grams a day… it’s usually less than 40 a day on the bad days. But different things work for different peeps. Just get back on ‘a life diet’ that sustainable for you.

I have one cheat day each week. It gives me a chance to take care of any cravings I have had.

Is it the word die, in diet that makes people cringe? 🤣 I made the same mistakes last week. Tomorrow will be a new day. I want to eat good fuel for my body and throw away the fad diets.

Yep, I can relate.

Don't think of it as a "diet". Think of it as a healthy lifestyle wherein you have the power to be mindful of what you eat and control your weight.
