Has anybody used adjustable dumbbells? I've been using my 10 lb dumbbells for a few months now and need to get some bigger weights. Thinking about adjustable dumbbells for taking up less space, cheaper per pound. But there's a possibility they could break, and would it be more convenient to switch dumbbells during a workout if I have traditional dumbbells? I've been looking at local classifieds and I can get a pair of adjustable dumbbells from 5-25 lbs for $80-125. I also found someone selling an adjustable kettlebell for $60. Are there any other pros and cons I should consider?

I’ve had a set of bow flex adjustables for a decade, it still works. That being said manufacturers quality would matter. I’ve seen some used ones for cheap on fb market tho

Yeah, I've seen some used Bowflex dumbbells for $300 a pair. I'm sure they're worth it, just not sure I'm ready to spend that much yet. Do you know of any other decent brands that might be a bit more affordable?

I have the bow flex ones that go up to 52.5 lbs. they work and serve a purpose but I wish I got one that went up to 90 lbs or wish I had the money to just get a full set so I wouldn't have to be gentle with them like you do with the adjustable ones

so if they only go up to 25 they’re probably not the last pair you’ll ever own, but for $80, seems like a good way to expand your equipment in a useful way for not much money… especially if you can sell them and upgrade later if you feel like it

I’ve seen them range from 100-300. Depending how fast you want it, might be worth to keep an eye out for deals. I haven’t used any other brand tho

by the way, the old school solution is “plate dumbbells” — you can get those even cheaper. like $50 for the same or more weight. but you will probably also need some extra 1lb & 2lb plates. and to answer your question, I have a pair of bowflex adjustable dbs and yeah they work fine. I’d prefer “individual” dbs but the adjustables serve me fine. my advice is to just go for it, dumbbells are very useful, this is not a shake weight or something silly, so, be biased towards action :P

That's a good point John, if I decide I want something different I could resell the dumbbells. I think I will watch the used market for a while, see if I can find a good deal. And I probably will want higher than 25 lbs before too long. The Bowflex is looking pretty good with the wide range and smaller increases between sizes.
