I hate how quick people are to judge. Mental health is taboo amongst many people where I live. My daughter has ADHD and doesn't do well at school. This is the third time she's going through the 6th grade (1st of junior high), and her doctor prescribed Ritalin to see if it works. We've tried different schools, from the public to the most expensive ones. We've tried therapy. We've tried everything. And now that she'll start meds, everyone around my support system is trying to shut it down (including her dad). "That makes them dumb," "that makes them slow," "that's not good for children," "you can't give her that; you're not a bad mom." It's exhausting. I've taken the same med, and I'm fine, not dumb, not slow, no nothing, and I am most definitely not a bad mom. I've had it with people thinking they know everything. Why don't they give me the solution if they're so knowledgeable? Please, I'd be happy to be enlightened. And by the way, why haven't they given me a solution in the past 13 years? I've had it.
So sorry for the rant. This is the only place where I can write and get advice without breaking relationships :(

I taught for many years and have seeing many different degrees of ADHD and ADD. I am totally on board with do what works best for her. If meds are helpful, use them. I would also suggest you do some research on diet and how it affects behavior. It was a game changer for my son.
Did they do an IP on her? I don't understand repeating a grade 3xs...that makes no sense to me. Best of luck, educate yourself as much as you can. You will be her biggest advocate!💜💜

Have you ever heard of Brightmont Academy? They teach one to one which means it’s just the student and the teacher. Depending on the problem she is having that may help in regards to focus/organizational skills. It really helped for me (personally. I know everyone is different) it is expensive though so be prepared for the price range.

Thank you, RN16! I don't live in the US, though. I live in Colombia; the judicial system is not the same. I wish. The doctor advised us to just give her the meds on school days in the morning as she wouldn't need them otherwise. The meds are out for now, but I'm checking in daily to see when they'll be back. It's like two or three weeks before the school year ends, and it's not looking very promising.

Thank you, Diana 1234. I will definitely look into the diet. by IP I'm assuming you mean an individualized program? No, the school is supposed to, but we can't get the appointment for the life of us.

Thank you, briancpickett1. I live in Colombia, so there is no chance of looking into that school :P But I did have her in a one-on-one school last year, which was very expensive but didn't work out for her. It is like she doesn't want to do the job, which I know is not true, but it's very frustrating.

Your responses are spot on. Sounds like you could figure ways to use the verbiage you wrote to shut them down.
I did well in school, but I wonder if I would have done more if I started Adderall BEFORE age 55. Maybe I would have a better work life.

Thank you, Bottom Line Up Front. I agree with you. I wish I started taking meds earlier. It would've saved me a lot of suffering.
