Weight Loss

I have encountered a weird moment in my life: people telling me that I do not need to lose anymore weight. Only two people have said this to me so far. I am not skinny. I am 5'4" and 166.8 lbs. A healthy weight at my height is 145 lbs at the most. My goal weight (and a weight that I felt comfortable with in the past) is 140 lbs. I never know what to say to people in this situation. I have never encountered this problem before, even in my previous weight loss. I have decided to ignore the comments because as long as I am at a healthy weight there should be no issue. Oh well, I should be happy that my weight loss is being noticed, I guess. Got to look on the bright side of this weird moment. I hope everyone has a great day (with no snow or ice hopefully!!!)

Well, it's hard to say what the appropriate response is. Depends on who is saying what and in what tone/approach. As long as you remain confident yet respectful, this will maintain a pretty clear-cut understanding that you are in control, yet hear the other persons concerns. "You look great at this weight. Don't you think you've lost enough? Maybe you could stop losing and maintaining?" "Thanks for noticing! Yeah, I have lost quite a bit so far and it feels great. I've set a goal that I want to reach and I'm almost there. I've considered maintaining my current weight, although it's not where I truly want to be, but I'll consider it." As you can see, the response is very confident and let's the other person know that you are 100% in control. You've thought things through and you know where you want to be. At the same time, you hear the other person and recognize their concerns. Again, this is a hypothetical situation. Relationships are tricky. For example, you may not be able to conjure this kind of dialogue to an overbearing, authoritative, or even oppressive figure in your life, if you happen to have one. But, even then, think positive. Do it with a smile on your face. And on another note: do really consider what they are saying. Is your goal realistic? Is it healthy? Have you discussed it with a health professional? Have you done enough research to know that you goal is realistically attainable and maintainable. While I can see that the original poster is aiming for a healthy number/BMI, this situation can be a slippery slope for others who may be facing eating disorders and body dysmorphia. As a disclaimer to those of you who may be going too far and not hearing true concerns from your loved ones.

I've gotten the same response from people at work. they are always the ones who could really benefit from losing some weight and exercise. They want a magic solution, and do not want to see that someone else had followed a plan toward healthier, especially if they keep gaining the pounds.

Do some people think we are losing weight because we are sick or something? They do seem to be overly concerned about what we weigh. I agree with those who say just smile and say something positive, like Thanks for noticing my weight loss. I'm feeling great, etc.

My theory is that the critics are slightly pudgy themselves, and if you get down to the delightful, flat-belly size 6, then THEY will be perceived as the ones who need to go on a diet. Ignore your doubters - go for the size 6.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful advice and comments. Armen, your thoughts and advice is wonderful. Sometimes it can be seen as a compliment that someone thinks that you are "thin", but when they tell you to stop losing weight it can feel kind of controlling. I will definitely smile and keep my comments positive the next time I am told this because I believe that it is coming from someone who cares about me and is not jealous, just concerned.

Congratulations on all the great work you've been doing to get the weight off. Don't listen to the comments of others. Follow your heart, and when you are at peace with your total weight loss, do what you can to maintain, and stay at peace with yourself.

Congratulations on all your hard work! And I think I know what you mean. One year ago I was 280 pounds. And as of Monday, I'm at 168.4. I have also had a couple of people tell me that my weight is good enough. And that I should stop there. I tell them I don't want to be good enough. I want to be at a healthy weight. I have goals and I plan to reach them. Don't let anyone keep you from your goals.

Congrats on the weight loss. One of the most insidious threats to health and happiness is well-meaning people telling you stuff like that. "You're getting too skinny." "Oh relax... you've earned it." Etc... You're doing great. You'll know when it's time to stop losing and start maintaining. Keep on keeping on!
