Happy Wednesday my friends!🙋‍♀️😎

As I was reading through the posts the other day, someone mentioned still being 'squishy', though they had lost many pounds. It really stuck with me, because that is my predicament too! I'm at my goal weight, but still squishy! The scale says I'm successful but I don't feel "done" with my transformation yet.

The Calculator.net site says my ideal lean body mass/body fat goals at my current weight of 131.2 would be (based on 3 different popular formulas):
90.8 lbs (69%)muscle/31% body fat
93.8 lbs (71%)muscle/29% body fat
88.5 lbs (67%)muscle/33% body fat

As of this morning, my scale registered 88.0 lbs muscle/28.9% body fat. However, the Calculator.net calculated my body fat @ 32.9%! According to the site, I am over the line for obese😖

I've heard references here on FS many times to recomping/toning/etc...but honestly never really understood that it wasn't to LOSE more weight, but kind of to REDISTRIBUTE the weight. These graphics that I found have finally helped me to understand a little better. I hope they also help others out there in FS Land.

Have a great & successful day as you navigate your path to better health. 💙💙

liv001 squishy bits and past obesity. oh Hun I hear you there. 340 down to 188.4. In between I had 2 kids, lost down to 103, gained up to 194 and on my way back down. Squishy doesn't begin to cover it. I tend to hold my weight on my lower abdomen and would kill for a tummy tuck. Or rather a lower abdominal resection 😂. It runs hip to hip and just below my navel to just above my bikini line. Very localized. Even at 103, no fat anywhere else (having to stuff a 328aaa just felt so wrong), just that one spot. sigh. Surgery/freezing it will, at this point, never be in budget. Basically do all the work and not get the rewards. My battle cry has always been-just let me look HUMAN.

@Brigit0...thanks😊 Even though they are just Google search results, I enjoy being retired and having the extra time to present different topics for discussion and inspiration💙💙 Have a great day!

You're right superman, it does say fat loss. So yeah, the same weight because you replaced the fat with muscle would indeed increase metabolism.

Now is the time to build muscle. Aerobic exercise and weight lifting are two parts of a healthy lifestyle, squishy or not. Your skin has to shrink over time and the best way to help that is to work the muscles. "Toning" is just code for muscle building, coded so gals don't freak out about muscle-building

To be clear, I'm not accusing anyone on this thread of this, but I've seen it elsewhere, especially on MFP. There are people way into bodybuilding who are disdainful of cardio and tell people it's useless and discourage them. For a beginner, they shouldn't be discouraged from the movement they will do, because there's some exercise they "should" do. The general result is they do neither. Cardio has its benefits, too.

Writingwyo, I have seen that too and it's pathetic. But I've realized that they are super defensive of what they prefer and of their preferred physique, to the point where they want everyone to bow down, say they are right about everything and that that physique is the best. Just watch how prickly they get if someone merely says that a runner's body is attractive or that they don't find muscle size more attractive the bigger they are. Just watch. And yet, all over the internet, you have men and women who are into weight lifting being disdainful about "skinny fat" people "cardio bodies", when in fact, there is quite a range of "cardio bodies" and quite a range of "weightlifting bodies". Sorry, most women who lift weights don't have an ideal hourglass shape and no belly fat. Some do because they watch their diet and their activity is high (even if they choose not to call that activity cardio, it is) and it creates a false impression that you just have to eat protein, lift weights, and bam, you'll look instantly better than those cardio bitches. Nah, I've seen enough bulky weightlifters to know it's not a panacea.

Yes, yo, the average person who decides to do a bit of resistance training at home (or even goes to the gym and starts learning the machines or dumbbell or barbell movements with light weight) is not going to lose muscle or diet if they do a bit of cardio daily, especially if most don't even move at all beyond walking around their house or garden.

I've also NEVER seen someone go down 15 percentage points in body fat and not lose any muscle or water with it, NEVER, and yet this graphic also states "reduction in fat % only". I'm waiting for all the stories of newbies who lost 15% body fat and gained so much muscle their weight stayed the same. What's much more likely is that if someone is in a deficit and starts resistance training, their scale weight will go down (some fat, some water) but not dramatically because they will either retain more muscle or even put on a bit if they are achieving progressive overload. Some of these graphics exaggerate the benefits of weight training to the point it's almost like propaganda. And they create an extreme opposite scenario with "hours of cardio" and "only cardio". Please, the reality is far more nuanced.

I’m not saying cardio is useless. Just to be clear, there’s a place for it. But when it comes to fatloss and being in a deficit. You need adequate protein and enough muscle stimulation for your body to decide it’s worth keeping. And body types, just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But I have to say this, I never got compliments from being scrawny or when I was bulking. I get random compliments from lady strangers at the groceries now saying how much muscles I have or they can’t believe how my arm looks. I never thought I needed compliments to keep going but can’t lie. It made me felt good and helped me keep putting in the work.

Superman, comparing lifting twice your bodyweight for someone who doesn't lift weights and going for a light (easy? can I make it clearer?) jog for someone who considers themselves fit who lift weights is absurd. You don't need lots of training to go for a jog and not need to recover from it all week if you are in shape.

So, I say this " It all depends on your goals and what you can maintain for life." This means, do what you want with your body depending on your goals. You say "In fact, if going for a light jog exhausts someone (like some people who lift weights claim) and is soooo demanding on their recovery, they are out of shape" Who exactly claimed that, anyway? Wanting to prioritize lean mass retention doesn't mean jogging is too exhausting. After 22 years of lifting, I know what it does to me and most others do as well. There is a reason Dragmoscow didn't jog for his contest prep. It isn't for us, but like I said before, people can do all the running they want. I walk around town and ride a stationary bike at work. I benefit from plenty of cardio. Jogging where 5x my bodyweight is striking concrete is not productive for my goals, that's it.

I agree with you there. If given a short period of deadline, cardio wins hands down. Lifting wins in the long race

If you want to make a comparison, that would be like asking someone who only lift weights to run a 10k in a good time (adjusted for sex, age). Your analogy isn't at all fair.

I can easily do more than 5 miles of jogging at any given moment. Lifting, after several years, actually keeps the heart very healthy, if it doesn't, you don't lift hard enough.

"I've also NEVER seen someone go down 15 percentage points in body fat and not lose any muscle or water with it, NEVER, and yet this graphic also states "reduction in fat % only"."--You're taking this simple graphic way too literally and getting dramatic again with the caps. It's not like it's giving a timeframe. It can happen after a couple bulks/cuts, especially with newbie gains. For young men, weight gain can even occur, not just maintenance.

Good for you. I didn't say that people who lift can't jog. I said those who do who claim an easy jog is too taxing are obviously out of shape.

Cool, well, it isn't young men in the illustration and isn't aimed at young men only. I'm not being "dramatic", I'm simply not agreeing with all the propaganda. Apparently, strength training makes you "happy and positive" (how many lifters are obsessed with minute details of their body shape and depressed about their BF%? plenty) and cardio makes you "depressed and anxious". If that's not propaganda, I don't know what is. So to not be "dramatic" I'm supposed to just nod and say yes to the parts that confirm my biases and ignore the BS?

Pointing out inconsistencies, questionable claims and hyperbolic statements is what's called having a discussion, instead of being a fanatic or a sycophant.

Yea like what Diablo said. I’ve done both too. In my late 20s. I was jogging 2 miles in 12-13 minutes give or take and was lifting 5 days a week. I never got passed 145lbs even without calorie counting and my lifting isn’t as strong as it is today. How light of a jog are we talking about here tho? 😂 mph and distance matters
