So I had a really tough day today at the gym. I came and the lady asked if I wanted to speak to a trainer and I said sure. He let me know that my BMI is way too high. He made me feel like my goals were unattainable and no one showed me how to use the machines. I got to the squat rack and was really confused and I ran to the bathroom and started crying. I cancelled my membership right after and felt like a total failure. I’m gonna try a new gym tomorrow and hopefully feel more comfortable. Wish me luck!

Ah Hannah, I'm so sorry to hear you had that experience! That trainer sounds like an a-hole. Definitely find a new gym and watch some people on YouTube that teach you how to lift. The machines usually show you how to use them. Also, just know, most people don't know what they are doing in the gym, feel self conscious or they are minding their own business and not judging you. I'm 216lbs and lift! Your bmi isn't too high-you will achieve your goals! Just don't give up!

Some people can be real jerks. I hope you told them EXACTLY why you canceled your membership. Something tells me management would not be pleased with an employee driving off paying customers

p.s. YOU are not the failure. The trainer is. A good trainer should be able to work with you regardless of your fitness and experience level. I hope this was a free consultation, and if not, you have EVERY right to demand your money back!! GRRRRR! This whole thing angers me! 😡

I totally agree

The gym is an intimidating place, so don’t worry about having a cry! The trainer was a jerk-was, for sure. But do you know what is amazing? You have dusted yourself off and are committed to try again. This is fantastic, you are an inspiration, not a failure

Instead of going to the bathroom to cry you could have grabbed him by the collar and let him know that all you need from him is help with the machines not his personal assessment of your body composition. Take control over how people treat you.

Please don't take my comments the wrong way. The trainer may have been rude but trainers are employed by the gym and will soon be out of a job if patrons complain. If he was rude did you lodge a complaint to the gym management? I suspect that you are very unassertive and reluctant to state what you need. I have a few suggestions for your next gym visit to make it productive. When you meet with the trainer tell him/her what you want to achieve- weight loss, strength development, physical training for a sport, etc. This will help the trainer create a plan for you. ASK the trainer how to use the machines and have the trainer WATCH while you try it out and MAKE SURE you are doing it right. In fact, a good trainer will do this automatically to make sure you don't get injured by using the machines in the wrong way. How did the trainer "let me know that my BMI was too high"? If you are in the gym to lose weight then I assume that your BMI is higher than you desire. Was the trainer at fault here or are you too self conscious about your weight? Most people in the gym are there to help themselves lose weight. I can assure you that the trainer has MANY clients who are overweight and want to drop pounds. Try not to be embarrassed and instead work with the trainer to create a training plan to lose weight. I promise you that the embarrassment will disappear as you see the pounds dropping off! I was also intimidated by my first visits to the gym. I was too nervous to join in the classes, to scared to ask how to use the machines, etc. I got over that when I realized that I was just wasting my money by that behavior. No more running to the bathroom and crying. ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT!!

I’m sorry you had a bad experience, and I’m glad you’ll try a different gym. Goals are attainable. Any trainer should know that and SAY that. Fortunately you learned early that this gym is not for you. But a good fit is out there. Keep looking! You got this!

Girl, what gym was this? Please file a complaint with management. I can't imagine what would have possessed him to tell you your goals were unattainable. This speaks volumes of his competency - it has nothing to do with you. I wish I could come show you how to use the squat rack personally. PLEASE let us know how things go today.

Hope the new gym is better. You are worth it.

And, his attitude may have been different if it was a paid session and not a complimentary intro. If you were to choose to stay with this gym AND want to sign up for some training sessions, don’t select him as the trainer.

1st BMI is a poop shoot to me. Body composition is what I go by. And according to BMI I am overweight. So that sounds like a shit trainer to tell you that your goals are unattainable. Every physique is attainable if you’re willing to put in the work, do what it takes and put in the time. Break it into steps and gradually get there. Use this as motivation towards your success. There will be more doubters through your journey but don’t let them win and you will achieve your goals. You can ask anything you don’t understand here, there are plenty of helpful individuals that are willing to help. Good luck n don’t give up, stay strong 💪

BMI is outdated trash. Focus on feeling healthy and loving yourself. Also, make sure that gym knows why you cancelled and make sure that "trainer" knows they suck.

Something I've noticed...when I was 50 lbs overweight, no one looked at me twice or tried to assist me with machines, movements, etc. I felt intimidated and embarrassed by my weight. I didn't give up though, I got a trainer who cared, ( I went through 3 before that happened) and learned how to use equipment properly. I notice now that I've lost weight more people respond to me. It's a shame. I try to be friendly and give advice or help when asked. I always compliment people that are working hard etc. Join a gym that has employees that care. You can get great support here as well. Keep going at it!💪👍

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience at the gym. That trainer is trash! Dont let that person get you down. You're doing the right thing and trying a new gym. Not all gyms are like that. I hope you find one that works well for you. ❤️

Sorry you had that experience. Some people working in gyms are losers. They're halfway fit and and have a bit of muscle that any guy can obtain half-assedly lifting and they think they're Mr. Olympia. They need YOUR business. Be demanding. Set guidelines for how they talk to you: "I'm not asking for your opinion on my weight, BMI or goals. I already know my goals. Can you help me reach them or not? What is the plan?" Demand transformation photos and ask whether they have helped other clients reach and maintain their goals before agreeing to anything. Make it clear that THEY are the ones trying to please you, not the other way round. And yes, when you try gyms (try a few if possible), ask for a tour, take in the atmosphere and the trainers' attitude. At minimum, they should show you how to use the machine, suggest a weight and reps and stay with you to make sure you are doing it correctly. If they don't care to impress you even on the first day, it will only get worse. Remember: most trainers make no money, aren't that smart, and are assholes with inflated egos. Only hire people you think are smart, compassionate and respectful, with no asshole attitude.

For the great majority of people the BMI is accurate enough. After all, it's just a ratio of your height and weight. The BMI does go wonky when people are "outliers", i.e. very tall, very short, or very muscular. If one doesn't fit into those "outlier" categories, it's accurate enough.

I agree with Kenna. Russkey, while I agree, that isn't the point. It's not the trainer's job to tell her that her BMI is "too high". It's his job to listen to her goals and make a plan if he can help her or say no if he can't. Can't stand schmucks who pass for "personal trainers" in gym acting like they have medical training or are an authority on lifting when they are just average in every way (intelligence, physique, income) and have the nerve to be arrogant.

no goal is unattainable and the fact that you are going and making an effort makes you a complete success. Join a different gym and surround yourself with people whose only agenda is to be helpful and supportive. U Rock !!!!
