One of my husband's clients convinced him to go to this meet up group on Sunday to learn about being vegan. This is not a bad thing, but we are not even vegetarians so this would be a huge lifestyle change. He came home from it and we watched the movie they recommended called Forks over Knives. It was all about how eliminating animal products lowers your risk for cancer and heart disease and helps you live longer and better. Now the problem is that I am on a low carb diet right now so I am eating a lot of meat products! I don't even think I could do a low carb diet as a vegan. Other articles I've read say that fat is not as bad as they used to think and grains aren't healthy for you. There are so many different messages out there! Does anyone even know what is really healthy? I don't know what to believe anymore. I know I'm not ready to give up low carb, at least until I get to my goal weight. But after that I need to pick a lifestyle and stick to it. I'm just not sure I could pick one so extreme in any direction.

I've tried every diet out there, and some more than once. If I've discovered anything, it's that totally depriving yourself of something you love doesn't work over time. That old saying "moderation in everything" seems to be the best idea, at least for me. Right now I'm watching what I eat, particularly the "bad carbs," weighing frequently and keeping the food journal. If you enjoy meat, eggs, etc. and give them up completely you'll never be happy. Meet, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, "good fat" and staying away from processed foods seems to me to be the best idea.

Ditto on the "moderation in everything". So many articles and books are out on just about any "plan." The main idea is to pick one or customize your food intake to fit your life, your lifestyle and your budget. Your way of eating (WOE) should be something you can live with long term, make and keep you healthy AND satisfied. A "diet" is more for vanity pounds. I prefer eating 80% whole, clean foods with mainly seafood, eggs, a bit of chicken, and beef (rarely) as a meat sources. I can do a lot with Greek yogurt from adding it to baked goods or having it as a dessert with unsweetened berries. 20% of WOE should be "fun" foods. Those foods that you really enjoy, just make sure to have them super seldom or very portion controlled. Vegan is great for a lot of people but most doctors will tell you to add supplements. It is also really easy to gain weight on beans, rice, and flours no matter what plan you decide is best for you.

Yes, there is a lot of mixed information out there. One minute fat is bad, then they are saying its good. My dad ate a lot of meat and fat and died of heart disease. I have been eating less and less meat and eating a more plant based diet. You might start by cutting down on the meat and eating more seafood (pescatarian). But everyone is right, moderation is key. Adding in vegetarian meals a few times a week, might be a good place to start too.

Vegan and vegetarian diets tend to be missing lots of vital vitamins &minerals, particularly the B vitamins (which are only found in meat and are necessary to sustain life), iron, and of course proteins. Lots of people arnt aware that protein that comes from meat is considered a whole protein as it contains all of the essential amino acids. Plant based proteins are not whole, and leave a lot of missing amino acids. Vegans can get their essential amino acids by eating a large variety of veg each day. Both diets have their ups and downs but unless you're ready to commit to a thorough supplement regimen then a vegetarian diet can definitely do more harm than good. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Thanks for all the support and info. Lots to think about. I like the idea of cutting down on so much meat. And I agree with the moderation comments.

Museseeker, I am vegan, and almost paleo with it. Some corn and potatoes and legumes, but I don't do rice. It's doable. I think part of it is seeing what works for you, and using FS to track macronutrients. I've learned about myself that I do best when I eat more fat (nuts, nut butters, olives, olive oil) and less carbs.

I am also no vegetarian but best next to one...B vitamins are not only found in meat...and neither is iron and much more.... Beans, seeds, barley, spinach, beet greens, peanuts, rice, cabbage, potatoes, and much more...except Vitamin B12 or also known as cobalamin. I take a protein called nitrofusion, provides 21 grams of nutrients dense protein that includes all natural ingredients. And Its really easy on my stomach. Unlike whey. It cost me merely 0.80 cents to eat 21 grams of protein. Meanwhile a chicken breast cost 2.00-4.00 dollars... Everyone of those foods I named contents Iron. 1 cup of spinach, is 36% of your daily need. I eat spinach everyday in a smoothie. So If you have a question about vitamins, minerals, branch chain amino acids I own a small garden, and after its all set, might take you a day in your weekend, it takes you 15 minutes of 2 days a week...water. And your gold. You have free food. Produce is the most expensive stuff at the grocery store. So might as well produce it for yourself. We also have some chickens. which get the scraps of my produce, and rotten food...they give me eggs. And poop which makes excellent fertilizer. You can go even farther and buy yourself a foodsaver...and go the extra way. Freeze it all...you might as well. I dunno its non GMO- No Hormones. No high levels of lead, mercury, arsenic (I don't even wanna go about the ocean, and kids can't have more then 1 can of tuna a week). Low glycemic load. Eat healthy fat. And someone said eat in moderate. Truth! That's being active, eat smart, that's being healthy. And grow a garden.

Yes, a plant based diet is one of the healthiest out there. You don't need a bunch of supplements if you get a varied diet (that's a fallacy). I've been cooking replacing meat with veggie crumbles and veggie meatballs and the family doesn't have a clue, lol! I made an awesome stuffed shells with "meat" sauce (crumbles) and the whole family loved it. Start experimenting.
