I have trouble with patience. Was supposed to wait until July to get my labs done for cholesterol, A1C, creatinine, BP, sodium, etc. Moved my doctor appointment to June 1st, getting tests done next week. I have been adhering to my diet (vegan, 85% non-processed) so well, and I just want a status update. I feel great, my skin is rosy and clear, and I'm sleeping better, but nothing brings me joy like numbers and stats. 😄🔢🔣

My goals are to lower my total cholesterol (206) and LDL (130) to remove threats of Statins. Current doctor is vegetarian, in great shape, and is very supportive of me making lifestyle changes to fix my health rather than relying on the pharmaceutical companies.

Doc knows that I've switched from vegetarian to vegan (gave up cheese: sniffle-sniffle 😞), and that I've swapped out almost all processed foods (exception: basic condiments like EVOO, Teriyaki sauce, hot sauce, mustard) for raw fruits & veggies. Even ditched rice & pasta. Currently only cooking dried beans & legumes, along with the veggies that require it: eggplant, potatoes, etc. Stir-fried halved cherry tomatoes taste so good that I'll probably never go back to canned toms again. Protein is mostly coming from beans, potatoes, lentils and soybeans. Fresh fruits for breakfast and lunch, salads and cooked legumes with veggies for dinner. Saturated fats <6 grams/day. I thought I'd miss pizza, but I've actually adjusted to the lack of cheese.

Eye on the Prize! 🏆

curious to see how your numbers are. I'm trying to lower as well.. although I gave up cheese did great for two months then added it back😬 after reading your post and thinking I need to ditch it again.

@MisChelle: Check back after I post the results on June 1st before committing to erasing cheese! LoL. I am sensitive to dairy, so I don't miss the bloating, and butter is easily swapped for olive oil. That move just about zaps all the saturated fat that I was consuming and pushing up my LDL with. The biggest changes were for me to empty out my pantry of store bought breads, boxed pastas and processed nuts (now I roast & toast my own almonds, so that gets rid of the additives & preservatives). It helps that I love to cook.

@Mermee: Thank you! I know you've been down the same vegan path, so you know all the changes it requires (plus substitutes!). The decision to make this all about the farm was me just trying to lower my levels in only 3-4 months. I'll post the old vs. new numbers after my appointment -- I won't just say "It's Fine!" because that means nothing. Gotta have the stats 'cause it's like before/after photos 😄

Giving up cheese wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I do make some vegan cheese substitutes with nutritional yeast, which is kind of fun. Good luck on the blood tests. When I changed up my diet, I dropped my LDL about 15 points

I was pleased with my last labs. Went from a1c of 6.8 to 5.7. My triglycerides went down a lot and my total cholesterol.

Hope it goes well. If I remember correctly your ldl was not that high. The doctor wanted you to do statins even so?

@Liv: My LDL was 130, and once you hit menopausal age, they like to keep it around 70. The CDC advises <99. My total was 206, which isn't bad, but ideally it should be <199. The default in the medical community is to push pills, because they don't believe anyone will really change their diet. To some extent, that's true: my doctor told me on my last visit that her patients who eat the most red meat & processed meats are the ones currently taking statins!

@Morticia: Awesome drop in your A1C%!!! Did you quit sugar cold turkey? What % are you aiming for, and when do you get tested again? Love to see the determination and devotion in people taking back their health! 😊💙💜👍🏻

@WWYo: I just sprinkle the nutricional yeast on foods as is, but I'll likely get experimental with it this summer. Cooking Project! And your lipid numbers are amazing, from when you posted about them. Definitely role model levels. We eat similarly, so I'm hoping for big drops, even though I've only been at this for less than 3 months.

Before you use me as a role model, you might want to know that mine naturally is pretty low. When I was younger, it was in the 120s and 130s. It went up with age.. When the LDL hit 98 and I saw the recommendation that it shouldn't be higher than 99, I decided I'd better do something about it. As for doctors assuming people won't change their lifestyles, sadly they're right. My father is spending $200 or $300 on diabetes medication and is looking at another knee replacement rather than lose the weight.

@WWYo: How awful about your dad! Sugar is so incredibly addicting for some. And usually people with 1 disease pick up several more along the way, so it's not just diabetes, but angina, high blood pressure, kidney stones 😞. Such unnecessary and preventable misery and pain. I don't have any of those things, but I recognize that it's much easier to nip bad habits early than to reverse damage. I'm still going to shoot for your stats, whether you got them from hard work or the genetic lottery. 😄

@YetAnother: I started getting cholesterol reads/Lipid panels done around your age (mid-twenties). I had become a vegetarian at age 16, saw a dietician at 18 to learn how to structure a balanced diet, and was alerted to health pitfalls during University when my dad developed pre-diabetes. I just had all the tests done during my annual physical. Because I avoided fast food and ate my fruits & veggies, walked & jogged, took dance classes into my mid-thirties (ballet, tap, modern), and did Pilates, I was able to keep my numbers very low. Except for 3 years ago when I became fat & lazy. Back on track now. If your lifestyle has changed since high school, I would definitely schedule an annual physical with labwork to establish a baseline. Your OBGYN should be able to do all this (and you should go anyway for a Pap and the usual STD screening & birth control).
