Happy Thrifty Thursday 💲💲

With the price of food goin up ↗, I've been lookin for ways to make my fresh produce last longer (plus - I can save on gas by not driving to the store as often!😊)

I tried the apple in with the potatoes and IT WORKS!!! The spuds DEFINITELY last longer (without sprouting those 'eyes'). I just bought lettuce and will be trying the towel wrap later today. Lastly, I think I'll give growing a small herb garden a try, so freezing them sounds like a great idea!

Has anyone else tried any of these money saving ideas? Or do you have additional suggestions?

*Note* I did get 40 minutes of weed-eating done yesterday in the backyard!💪 That is a big NSV for me! Just in time, too...before the rain came back today☂💧

Have a great day, full of mindful food choices and joyful gratitude💙😊🙏

Good one. Certainly something to work on for me as well. Here are some things I do: Carrots last quite a bit if in plastic. Some veggies can be renewed by placing them in really cold water (like celery or lettuce) Some lettuce can stay fresh long by keeping them "rooted" in water... like celery, chinese cabbage, romaine. ... some veggies can be frozen if you cannot use them... like peppers... just flash fry and bag and they will work for stews...

Avocados are notorious for ripening up fast. I buy them still hard and immediately put them in water in a bowl in the fridg. Slows down the process. Hope this helps :-)

Good morning CrystalJo😊, like @liv001, I trim longest stems of herbs and stand in a glass with about an inch of water then cover lightly with plastic wrap. Cut off base of celery and stand in a jug of water in fridge door. (I make stock from cut pieces). I plan our meals around what I buy to minimize waste. For example, we might have an avocado week followed by egg salad week. I live in a smallish (Ontario, Canada) city but I’m thinking of growing a few tomatoes/green beans in my sunny backyard this summer. Keeping faith🧘🏼

@LivinBreezy...I hadn't heard about putting them in water...does the water soak in through the skin/peel? Thanks for your tip!

@Liv001...I tried putting my baby carrots in a plastic container, covering with water (as suggested in a blog) but I thought they seemed 'slimy' from being in the water. Have you tried that? Thanks for leaving these tips!

I'm definitely going to try the apple in the potato bag trick. I am extremely fortunate in that I live only about 1/3 of a mile from the grocery store, and 1.5 miles from the Farmer's Market, so I do all of my grocery shopping on foot (carrying the loot back in bags on my shoulders, NOT pushing a cart). I get a workout every time I shop, and will usually make 2 trips. Then repeat 3-4 days later.

Good morning Maguscanook🌞 I still have high hopes of putting in a raised bed for lettuce, tomatoes and zucchini. Weather is still just too unpredictable! I really appreciate you leaving your tips and wishing you the best on your little urban 'garden'🌱🌿

@JustBananas...how FORTUNATE that you live so close to shopping!! I'm ready for our Farmer's Market to open up in the nearby town for produce. Also, I discovered an awesome Produce Stand/Store...but it's about 20 miles or so from home😲

@CrystalJo, The Avocados skin keeps the meat safe. And the water slows oxygen from getting to the skin hastening the ripening process. Pop 'em into water then the fridge! :-)

My avocados stay out of the fridge until they are almost ripe and then I just put them in the fridge on the door, no water necessary and they last for weeks.

I have not stored baby carrots in water... In my opinion they do better with less humidity so I add paper towels in bags or plastic containers to draw any moisture from them. Carrots with skins can last a while like this for sure.

Wow!!! Crystaljo this is great information, I tried the wrapping greens in paper towel method and it does make them stay fresh a little longer, but I never tried that potato and apple method thanks so much for the tip. your such a blessing to me, have a wonderful day today.

Thanks wifey9707💙 I pretty much do the same thing, except they're in a bin on the bottom shelf bc there's no room in the door. It's SO nice to see you here! Seems like it's been too long🤗

@liv001...no wonder! The submersing was probably meant for the big carrots with skin! Dohhhh🤦‍♀️

Yes Crystal. Too long. I’ve been busy with work but things are calming down a little. 💞 Any new plates or bowl finds lately?? I need to see!! 👀

Like Wifey suggested I leave my avocados out in a bowl on the counter til ripe then refrigerate. I usually buy 2 to 3 at a time cause Hubby doesn't like them. I buy prewashed lettuce (cause I prefer not having to worry about soggy lettuce). Fresh Farms Green leaf, Red leaf & Romaine keep quite awhile in my fridge. If I buy Spring mix or spinach we eat a lot of salads to insure it's good til used. I sometimes put a paper towel in the spinach to absorb moisture. I throw spinach in all kinds of cooked dishes. If you grow an herb garden, you just have to snip what you need. If I snip too much I put the ends in a glass of water to keep them fresh. The end of the season you can preserve them in oil in the freezer. I usually only do that with basil...too tender to survive the cold.
