After a particularly fun weekend with out-of-town friends, I am planning a 3-month Detox. Today is hangover recovery (hot tea and broth, lots of water). I do not bounce back as easily as I did in my 20's ☹️.

Starting tomorrow, doing 2 days of just Leek soup/broth. Then 1 week of raw fruit only, with 1 type of fruit each day, all day (mangoes, pineapple, watermelon, bananas, papaya, strawberries, blueberries).

Week 2 through 3 months will be fruit for breakfast & lunch, and salad for dinner. I make all my own dressings (thank you, Jamie Oliver!), and protein for salads is usually beans (from dried red, black, garbanzo, pinto and white), edamame, lentils, almonds, sunflower seeds or walnuts. A gazillion combinations with a gazillion different veggies. No cheese (will use nutritional yeast instead) for 3 months, as I'm trying to keep it vegan rather than vegetarian.

I plan on doing bloodwork at the doc's at the end of the Detox, because my cholesterol levels refuse to drop below 216. Suspect that cheese 2-3 days/week, along with decreased exercise is the problem. I'm hoping the switch to 85% raw foods plus (much) more exercise can net me a score of 190 if I really push myself. Otherwise, my health is great.

Happy Monday, All!

Your going to lose muscle mass during your misguided detox and likely you are not getting enough complete protein from beans and lentils unless you pair them to get all of the 20 essential amino acids and eat enough of them to support your muscle mass you do have. When you lose muscle mass you lower your resting metabolic rate so will not be able to eat as many calories as normal would. You need to eat enough protein along with a progress resistance training program to at a minimum maintain your muscle mass and RMR. You should consult with a registered dietician to help you structure a healthy and sensible weight loss program design specifically for you.

Yikes! I’d die. I think. 🥴 I’m curious to see how this goes for you. Keep us posted.

@Flahyker: I consulted a dietician when I first went vegetarian as a teenager. Muscles happen when I work out regularly, which is not the case today. When I do daily aerobic-type exercise with resistance training, my metabolism goes up and I burn calories like fire. I do understand how people that eat High Protein/High Fat/Low Carb diets freak out when faced with vegans' & vegetarians' plates. I only have low muscle mass when I don't work out regularly.

@Mermee: for me, any bloat goes away with aerobic-type exercise. I want to start running again, but will be starting with hikes. @Wifey: Anything is possible with the right perfume and the right soundtrack!

Can’t argue with that!!! 🥰🥰

I don't eat much meat and tried a strict vegan diet for 3 weeks a couple years ago. I never could get more than 30 grams of protein. My doctor always tells me I can get enough protein from plants but I can't figure out how unless I eat cups and cups of beans.

@Fritzy: potatoes, peas, lentils, and edamame all are good sources of protein. I've never worried about getting enough protein. My muscles happen when I exercise, pure and simple.

I am not crazy about lentils and edamame but I've eaten them to increase protein. I will add 2 tablespoons of dry lentils to stews or soups I make - 4 grams of protein. An 8 oz baked potato is about 5 grams of protein. 1/2 cup of frozen peas is 4 grams, 1/2 cup garbanzo or kidney beans beans is 6 or 7 grams. A big serving of brussels sprouts is about 5 grams. Several fruits have 1 or 2 grams. Most vegetables in salads have minimal protein. I just can't see how to get a minimum of 40 grams of protein without cups of beans. Most of the vegetarians or vegans that I've seen on FS don't use the food journal so I have no idea how much protein they get. People who worry about protein for building muscles usually are trying to get 100 grams or more of protein. That's not me - my doctor told me if I'm not chopping down trees 40 grams is sufficient. So I am not vegan and if I don't eat meat I get most of my protein from fat free milk and eggs. I am not lactose intolerant. I also eat raw almonds to get about 5 grams of protein (about 20 almonds) and 1 low fat string cheese for another 5. Not getting enough protein can result in hair loss. I try but I don't understand when people say getting enough protein is not a problem. I sure can't do it with fruits and vegetables and I just can't eat 4 cups of various beans

@Fritzy: I honestly don't pay attention to the protein factor anymore. If you're eating dairy and eggs, along with legumes, you're probably fine. Your other option, of course, is to increase your exercise so that you can consume more calories from protein sources. If you're trying to lose weight, maybe stick with Greek yogurt and cottage cheese each day, and then fill in the rest with the beans, peas, potatoes, etc.

@Tim: Booze, beer & wine are all vegan. We might seem strange, but we're not crazy! 😄🍷🍸🍾🍺

Sounds interesting and I hope you'll share some photos of your meals. I would personally have a problem with the raw aspect and I'd want to have rice and oats, but that's just me. Do you mean the wine and beer you have is vegan? Because not all wine, beer or cider is vegan so best to check labels or look online - at least that is my experience in the UK and South Africa. Hope you have a great week JB! 🍌☀️💕

@Hazel: The REAL goal is to lower my total cholesterol from 216 down to 190 in 3 months.@Nikina: I dislike photos of food on the internet, so I won't be posting any. Also, I probably won't be drinking during this period, but which wines and beer are not vegan?

I put nutritional yeast on my shopping list. It sounds pretty good in a vegan or vegetarian diet. Crossing my fingers I like it!

Thats a good goal & I need to lower mine too. But I'm not doing a drastic 3 month detox like yours, I think I'd die or want to! Lol More power to you to get it done! I'm just staying the course & losing weight plus adding exercise when I can. Btw I was kidding you about your weekend! 😊
