This isn't really a journal entry as much as it is a question. Not really sure who all sees these, either. I wonder what everyone's thoughts are on fasting.
Certainly fasting is important from a spiritual stand point and is expected of God's people, but I wonder what you think of fasting from a body health perspective.

For a health stand point I do not like the idea. Is it healthy?...I don't think so. Your body NEEDS food and water and fasting either of these can be very damaging to your body no matter how long you do it for. Try a sugar fast instead. Cut out all sugars!...do a "Whole 30" much healthier- emotionally and physically.

I used to fast but stopped it when I became diabetic. Then I started logging my foods to see exactly what I was eating and made changes. After getting my blood sugar under control by my diet and walking every day, I am no longer diabetic. Healthy people can fast, especially for religious reasons. Elderly people need to eat to stay healthy and fasting might put too much stress on them. I'm sure others will answer you. Thanks for asking!

I think fasting for short times can be extremely healthy when done right. Fasting from food once or twice a week can bring big health benefits from all I've read. Of course you have to take into consideration your health and never fast from water. Since I became diabetic and take insulin I haven't been able to fast. It messes with my sugar too much but I still sometimes do a partial fast of only vegetables for a day here and there.

Fasting is a broad topic, you can fast for a meal, part of a day, a day or several days, fast from certain foods but eat others. Assuming you're talking about a complete fast for a period of time, if doing the fast doesn't cause problems due to other health issues, fasting can be a good thing. There are multiple health benefits including burning body fat for fuel, reducing inflammation in the body, and activating the SIRT-1 gene (called the "skinny" gene). And there are several ways to incorporate fasting and the health benefits into your life. I do 16:8 fasting most weekdays and on Sundays, meaning I go for 16 hours without eating, then consume all my food in an 8 hour period. I get the health benefits mentioned plus others, and it helps me to burn fat and lose weight more effectively. Some people can't do that because of being diabetic, some people have mentioned that fasting actually raises their blood sugar, so you have be aware of how it affects you. BUT....point is that there are definitely health benefits to fasting and/or reducing calories within a set period of time.

Just review diet, Fasting is not needed. You probably just need to tweek your diet and exercise plan. For example I know I need to increase my exercise and cut my calories just a little bit more. I can stay at 1275-1350 with more exercise or cut calories to 1200 or less with little exercise being a female. I am also noticing when my carb percentages are down and cutting out bread products has help me. But you need to find out what your calories weigh loss range is, don't use the fatsecret RDI as is it too high.

From everything I have read from doctors, our bodies naturally detox regularly. Cutting out some sugar and other foods may be a good thing for many people as a jump start in weight loss (psychological boost). If done for a short time, and makes you feel good, then go for it. I don't think water fasting is very healthy because you aren't getting the nutrients your body needs to function properly. If you eat healthy regularly, you will get the same results. It may just take a little longer.

I have read a lot of research. They say that about 85% of your calorie intake is used simply to fuel your digestive system. So, to do a fast allows your body to use that energy that would normally run your digestion, to heal and rest your body. Almost like a system reboot.
