ok...I might be opening a can of worms here...but I'm asking for advice regarding my calorie intake. I am 65, 5 foot 2.5" tall, only slightly active due to autoimmune disorders. The app says my RDI is 1500 cals. I have been aiming for 500 below that to lose weight, so about 1000 cals/day. This feels like plenty of food, especially when I cram it all in before 6pm. I don't feel unusually tired or ill (hard to tell with my other health issues 😜). I have tried upping my steps, using the elliptical (for only a few mins at a time), but this seems to cause me a noticeable setback of increased pain levels. I have not discussed this with my physician yet, I'm scheduled for a yearly exam in a couple of weeks.

Seeing comments about 'starvation mode' and insufficient nutrition makes me wonder if I'm on the right track 🚂??

@OldSandy...thanks! Yes, I plan to talk with Dr about it and maybe even a referral to nutritionist...but was curious in the meantime 😉

@shrewd...my exercise is minimal...just a smidge or 2 above sedentary. 🚶‍♀️I feel better having gotten so much useful info today. FS family is truly, truly helpful🤗😍

I've lost 14 pounds by counting calories on an app called Loseit.com I don't think you are eating enough calories. I'm about the same age & weight as you and I'm eating a minimum of 1300 calories a day. I usually walk 3 times a week at a moderate pace about 36 minutes each time. What I love about the loseit app is it's free. I enter how much weight I want to loose per week and they say how many calories I can consume. I wouldn't try to cram all your food in by 6 p.m. everything in moderation works best for me. I would start slow when working out. Cheers

I found that less fat and more protein helps me but I am maintaining and not losing.

I am 51 and in the same boat. I have 3 Autoimmune Diseases. AI aside, age and being female causes additional struggle. You need quick spirts to fire up your metabolism. like considering a sprint vs a long steady run. There are 2 things that you may find may help. I do 7 min Metabolic Workout in the morning, then my usual walk, just to loosen my joints. But just as important, if not more, as what you eat, also when. Intermittent Fasting is huge. it isn't how it sounds. it's more eating on the schedule our bodies were meant to do. 3 meals, during an 8 hour period, and no food for 16 hours (evening thru overnight). Reason being, if you eat little things all the time, especially later in the evening, your body won't burn the reserves it has been holding onto all day. Just some food for thought :)

Ask the experts. I try to keep my calories at 1200(doesn't always work) however other than my obesity I have no underlying illnesses. I do feel you about upping the exercise due to injuries. Let your physician make the calorie call & request a sit in with a nutrition expert. You do not need to do this alone🙏👍

I eat 1000 calories a day to . it's plenty for me. exercise 6 days aweek .

Personally I’d die on 1000. I’ll stay out of this convo because I disagree with much that’s been said here. I do wish you the best but please be careful. Ooops, was staying out of this convo, wasn’t I!? 😅

Crystaljo - per week, but if I can I push it more like every 10-12 days - or just wait for a day like yesterday that I bumped up greatly. Wifey makes a good point. Many reasons why very low calories isn’t a good idea. If you are active, physically exercising with demand, cooking for others etc. I was tested to determine my resting metobolic rate (1400 kcal per day), so my 400-700 less means .68-.9 lbs per week based upon food and 500 kcal activity above resting. If I sudden am able to exercise more, will need to eat more. This is certainly not guidance for a typical adult, rather someone under doctor’s care and monitoring with significant health issues/fall injuries that limit the ability to coordinate movement and strength. So take this as clear warning my example is not typical for healthy eating, rather due to my health history it was determine getting out of obesity will be life saving.

I understand Spark...and your suggestions would actually increase my intake a little. I will definitely try to get a referral to a nutritionist at my appt (or sooner). In the meantime, you can see my exercise is usually 3000 - 4000 steps with the FitBit...mostly just around the house. I am sleeping well and feel ok. No worries 😉😁

@pam...yes, I understand about eating late...that's why I stop eating by 6pm. I'm sleeping much better since I started doing this about 2 weeks ago. Hang in there...I didn't realize how many of us share the autoimmune diseases 😮 I also have 3 different ones. Bless you, as you battle on with me🤗
