Hi, I'm exactly the same, I even give folk that look of 'how could you? if they leave with loads of food left on their plate!

Beyond popping leftovers in Tupperware for the next day or two, I find it handy to work out what needs to be eaten first and cooking with those ingredients (rather than saying I fancy X, thinking xyz needs to be eaten, what can I make with it). Also, Oddbox.co.uk has a good blog which provides lots of info on storing fruit and veg to make them last longer, using them for different things (ie vinegars, cleaners, flavoured drinks), what can be frozen etc. You don't need to be a subscriber to access the blog, so worth checking out.

I either eat next day, give the leftover to my partner or if it's a big quantity and I feel like not eating again in same day I freeze it for days I feel like not cooking.

genieinabottle13 yeah i do that too, i always use up everything in my fridge/cupboard & keep all my leftovers in the fridge to eat the next day, or ill freeze for later in the week. my problem is just knowing when to stop eating in the moment, and learning that its not a bad thing to leave some food on the plate :)

It all depends on how hard you want to make a change

you could make some compost for planting with your leftover food. That way you would maybe feel less guilty. No meat or dairy products though.

This is interesting! If I’ve cooked it, i can throw away leftovers. If its an ingredient, i cant! For instance, iput a slice of bread into toast. When it pops up, i happily chop it in half and throw one piece away and just spread jam or marmite on the remainder....

I only cook what I want and if I go out same thing and to be honest I don’t really remember the last time I did

yes! we are a family of five so I can't just cook for myself unfortunately, we always have leftovers but I don't have guilt, rather I feel the temptation to eat all the leftovers lol. we don't have enough room to freeze our excess food but we actively try to find/cook food that will last 2+ days in the fridge (food with spices/long sell by dates) we also make "half done" foods such as homemade flat bread we just make the dough instead of cooking the full batch of bread at once

There used to be a (fad) diet where you always left someting on your plate. I did it for a while, in my younger years, and it did actually make a difference. But, yes, I struggled with the waste and have gone back to clearing my plate as instructed as a child.

I find myself not wasting these days. I cook my food separate from my son and partner's food. Because I have a better insight of the nutritional value of the food, I use only the amounts I need then if anything left in the fridge, I just get creative with it. My diet costs less than it did before because I am using things wisely :)

Yes I freeze or make it into something else the next day! Realistically you can only reheat so many times but maybe reach out to family or lonely neighbours...even homeless if there is enough. But you can only do so much..sometimes we just have to throw it! x

Both my husband and I were raised this way bit I don’t want my girls to grow up the same way so in our house it is fine to leave food on your plate. We rarely have any leftovers: I have learned to cook the right portions, and people hep themselves a bit at a time to what they think they are hungry for. Any leftovers are frozen and there are long lasting foods around (ice cream, nuts, apples etc) if people are still hungry. As others have said, meal planning really helps and shopping only for that (no ham just in case!) and then working out meals based on what needs eating first. Your body is not a dustbin and eating more than you want is not tidying it up, it is still waste, but with different consequences. The trick is new habits and strategies for this time of plenty!
