Hello from the desert southwest in Winterhaven, California! The warm weather here is perfect for getting my exercise walking or riding my bike on the many trails in the area. I thought I'd share with you a few recent pictures I've taken out here while on my walks.

Photo Description:

1) That's me, in need of a haircut.

2) Imperial County, where I am, is the only county in California where saguaro cacti (Carnegiea gigantea) grow. They also grow in Arizona and Mexico. Saguaro cacti don't start growing arms until they are at least 75 years old. This one is growing from the same spot as an ironwood tree (Olneya tesota).

3) A few weeks ago we had a bunch of rain. The rain has caused flowers to bloom. This is a California Fagonbush (Fagonia laevis) in bloom.

4) The rain also turned all the ocotillos (Fouquieria splendens) green. Until recently they all looked brown and dead.

5) One of my favorite things about being in the desert is seeing the amazing sunsets. This is the view from our campsite of a recent one.

freetime, I should have said the saguaros are native to Imperial County California, Arizona and Mexico. The do grow other places, but they're not indigenous anywhere else.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement, HCB! I know you're gonna LOVE it. I retired while living in Rock Hill, SC! Small world.

those desert sunsets never fail to take my breath away. I make the drive from coastal Southern California over to the mountains of Arizona to see my snowbird mom several times a year. It's along drive but I never get tired of that scenery!!

I just caught my misspelling of desert. 🏜 I could have said I was referring to the desserts made using prickly pear, (delicious by the way😋) but I'd be lying. 🤥 😄

Hi, Kenna! I tried nopales years ago when my friend from Guatemala shared some with me. I thought they were great! I haven't had them since, but since getting your advice I want to try them again for the health benefits you outlined. I'm just afraid to go into stores since the pandemic started, so I've put off looking for them until I can get vaccinated. Once I get some, I hope you don't mind if I reach out to you for a recipe. I have benefited from some of your other advice. Those low sodium V8's you recommended are AWESOME! I think the V8's and the bananas I've been eating, along with monitoring my sodium intake are responsible from getting my blood pressure back to ideal. Since receiving the advice from you and others, I haven't had any more elevated readings. I'm really happy about that!

I have made nopales from the actual plant just twice. Cut the spiked pads off the cactus, burned the thorns oscraped them cut and sliced. A lot of work, but I was teaching my young protege some cooking skills.. I basically buy them all cut up and ready. Like okra they contain a gelatinous material. I boil them for about 10 minutes rinse and drain. I store them in a berry basket so any slimy fluid drains away. Then I caramelize them and add to my morning scrambled eggs, add them to my heritage bean dish that I make and they get added to all my salads, chili, soups pork roast, etc. I’m guessing you have an iPad or some type of tablet or computer. When you are ready, and if you don’t mind sharing your email I will send you some sites. I got all of mine from Google and Pinterest.
