A little about myself. I am 64 years old and suffer from arthritis. I had my left knee replaced in 2009 and my right in 2010. After those surgeries I have great range of motion and strength but cannot kneel which I didn't anticipate. Nerve regeneration is very slow and can be very painful. I have sciatica and degenerative disk disease in my lower spine which I can usually manage by doing the stretches and exercises I learned from physical therapy.
Two years ago I began experiencing pain that I thought was a particularly stubborn bout of sciatica. The pain continued to increase and x-rays show my hip is badly deteriorated. For the past two years I have been bounced around for every possible test which ultimately show that I am a very healthy but obese woman. I have normal blood pressure, colesterol is excellent, no diabetes and my heart has zero blockages. All of this has been done because, statistically I am supposed to be very unhealthy due to my weight.
Pain management doctor had done injections in both my hip and back resulting in very little pain relief. Finally it has been determined that the only way my pain will get better is by having my right hip replaced. This was known two years ago, before all of the hurdles I have been put through. Right now I can barely walk even with a walker. As a result of the pain and horrible grinding and popping in my hip joint I have a really hard time with exercise. For years I have done water aerobics 3 - 5 times a week...now I have a hard time getting out of the pool.
I am expecting to have my hip replacement in mid to late December. I have done the pre op labs and x-rays and will have the pre op exam with my PCP tomorrow. Hoping my insurance authorizes the surgery sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, I have explored alternatives to pharmacutical medication. Medical marijuana is not an option for me because I have a negative reaction. Edible marijuana products do help me sleep better as long as they don't contain any sativas. I try to avoid foods known to increase inflammation and increase those that are natural anti-inflammatory. I am having some success with using Copabia oil both orally and topically. I have also researched the side effects of all of the myriad of pharmacuticals I have been taking. As a result I have stopped taking three completely and significantly reduced the dosage of two more. One of the most common side effects across the board is either weight gain or the inability to lose weight.
So there you have it. I have always been overweight but always active and have always eaten less than everyone I know. Using this app is helping me realize that I need to eat more and it is showing me that watch the daily allowances of nutrients seems to be working.

Well you do have some problems to work on. I just had my right hip replacement surgery 3 months ago. I had lost 35 pounds but have gained and regained the same 3 lbs over the last year. I am still not walking well. My muscles , they tell me, are very week. But I am still going to rehab. Medicare approved me for an additional 4 weeks. I think the w eak muscles are because I used the cane almost 3 years before the surgery. In looking back, the surgery was easy compared to the rehab. you seem to have gotten a good start. Have you figured out what kind of diet plan to gollow. I think the key is to find a way of eating that you can live with. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback 😊 I have been doing all of the things I learned from physical therapy to try to keep as much muscle as possible. Just discovered that I don't get nearly enough potassium in my diet and it is very important for muscle strength and retention. So far by using the information I get from this site while being as truthful as possible with myself I am learning. That is a good thing! Keeping positive and honest and having support...I think this time it will work.👍🙂

If i may ask, what is it about sativas that bothers you? Best wishes for your hip surgery. My Doctor suggested eliminating tomatoes and potatoes from my diet as they are inflammatory for arthritis. I did eliminate tomatoes but I still eat potatoes although not in huge amounts and not every day. I also have eliminated most forms of white sugar. I do believe that a mindful diet really helps. ❤️

I didn't know that potatoes and tomatoes were inflammatory for arthritis. Will keep that in mind. Don't eat much of them though.

I can definately relate to your situation as mine is very similar. Hopefully this app can help you track what foods will help and those that won't. Keep the faith.

Sativas make me feel a cold sweat start on the back of my neck, I get paranoid and can barely walk. Guess it's kinda like a panic attack.

momsog and friends, I have arthritis, tendonitis, and the really bad one: avascular necrosis (the bone is partially dead). I'm probably looking at a hip replacement in the future too. I do hope that you find relief. I can't take any anti-inflammatories other than Tylenol as they are processed through the kidneys. I am glad to know about tomatoes and potatoes causing inflammation, too. Thanks for sharing so much. You are new and have already started a conversation that helps others!
