I gotta vent a little here… Earlier today I did some shopping at Meijer. For those of you unfamiliar with this chain, it’s similar to Walmart and is a favorite in my state. Anyway, they have a pharmacy which offers various lab services. For the past 6 years I’ve gone to this store for an A1C check. Reason being, prior to getting my A1C checked at Meijer, I would go to a lab at my physician’s practice and it was 3x the amount that Meijer charges. Since I never reach my health insurance deductible, I always pay out of pocket. So, I go to Meijer and they fax the results to my doc and it only costs $35.

Today, I walk up to the pharmacy counter and ask if there’s a technician available for an A1C check. Mind you… I do this every year, it takes less than 5 minutes and no appointment needed. The technician asks if I’m diabetic. I tell her “no, not anymore”. (I haven’t been diabetic for almost 4 years!) She proceeds to tell me sorry… A1C tests are only for diabetics. Huh. So this is a curve ball. I tell her that I have this test done once a year HERE and they always fax the results to my doc which has kept me off meds. I also told her that my doctor recommends this store to his patients to save money.

Nope. No can do. I would like to think that the medical world would love folks like me to be proactive and to keep track of their health. Instead, they chose to deny me of a simple finger prick to determine whether I actually need to see my doctor and/or god-forbid to be placed on meds again… A test I’m willing to pay for. A test that there is not a shortage of. A test that is offered as a convenience so a patient doesn’t need to go to a lab. A test that is a discounted price so a patient doesn’t have to pay higher lab prices. DENIED. It shouldn’t matter than I’m no longer diabetic. If for any reason my levels creep back up, I want to know as soon as possible. I shouldn’t have to pay more $$ because my neighborhood pharmacy requires me to be diabetic.

I know I can buy a home kit to check A1C. Has anyone here on FS used a home A1C kit before? I’m interested in knowing if they are accurate. Thanks all for being here for my vent.

That's ridiculous! CVS has a do it yourself kit for $40 and you can test twice and get immediate accurate results.

Paulglendora, that's the cheapest I've ever heard of. Thank you for that. I'll look at CVS!
