I looked up on Google whether the period at the end of a quotation should go before or after the last quotation marks, since I have just been doing whatever looked right to me at the moment. Sometimes I do it one way, and sometimes the other. If the sentence was all quotation I probably put the period inside the quotation marks, but if it was something short at the end of a bigger sentence then I probably put the period outside. Here is something from somewhere on Google:

"The most common question people ask about quotation marks is whether periods and commas go inside or outside, and the answer depends on where your audience lives because in American English we always put periods and commas inside quotation marks, but in British English periods and commas can go inside or outside (kind of like the American rules for question marks and exclamation points). I use this memory trick: Inside the US, inside the quotation marks."

Some of my ancestors came from England, and my maiden name was very English, and sounds a little bit Royal, but I came from a bunch of farmers, so it must have been location, not family. But I still think that gives me the right to do it any way I want. I know I use too many comma's, I just love them.

Fasted 24 hours. It wasn't hard because I was busy. That was the longest period of Intermittent Fasting I have done. When I broke the fast I ate too much volume, but not calories. I sauteed LOTS of cabbage and put 2 eggs in.

I have a definite affinity for the semi-colon, myself. My favorite things are homophones, just in case you are interested. "Their sew fun two right the wrong weigh."

Actually it depends on if it’s the end of the sentence you’re quoting or if there is another word, or set of words, between the quoted material and the end of the sentence.

If the audience knows the intent and it is not an official document of record or legal document, then punctuation and grammar aren't all that important. The purpose is really about clear communication.

Snowwhite LOL same here....I intentionally turn off spell and grammar check on my home devices Reason- I work in higher education and the use of grammar and spelling is hyper sensitive. I just let my fingers fly on my own time and if I skip a period, capitalization, apostrophe, or sentence is grammatically incorrect I know everyone knows what I am saying. lord help me if there are any typos in this post!

I edited my post for any that already read it. I had said my maiden name was a little Royal. But in thinking about it later and remembering I come from a bunch of farmers, I changed the post to it sounding a little Royal, and that it must have been location, not family ties.

The period, or other punctuation goes inside the quote is it a complete sentence within the quote; Bobby said, "I want to go to the park." It goes outside the quote if not a complete sentence. My favorite thought by Robert Frost is " the woods are lovely dark and deep". However, current grammar rules in the "computer age" (although probably not endorsed by Strunk & White) say the punctuation always belongs inside the quotes…kinda' like the lost comma before the last 'and' in a list. I'm old fashioned though and follow the traditional rules.

I am going to try the cabbage with eggs. That sounds so good. I don't batter my fish anymore, I chop it as it cooks and stir a couple eggs into it fried with pam. It is so good.

xti3, That’s how I remembered it being as well. When I looked though it said that’s how England did it, what made sense, as opposed to the US, which is always within the quotation marks, except what I previously stated or in the case of a letter or number. Perhaps it’s changed since my days in elementary school.

I always put mine inside the quotation marks but didn't know if it was correct, must have been embedded in my mind from grade school nevertheless thanks for info.

Lol Deb. For me, if I'm writing professionally I feel proper grammar and punctuation matters. I'm not as OCD about it here. Seeing misspelled words in adverts makes me queasy.
