If you are lactose intolerant do NOT believe a friend that tells you she can order you a fancy coffee that doesn’t have lactose. So freaking miserable last night lol. 2 nonfat sugar free cinnamon dolce lattes... From now on if it takes a whole sentence to say the name, costs $3 for a small cup and I can’t pronounce it then I’m not buying it. Decent coffee but I can add a dash of cinnamon and Splenda to my plain coffee and it’s good. Now I just need to find fancy sugar free syrups and I can charge my guests and kids $3/cup!

Did some googling. Seems I can eat cheese because it has 0.4-0.12g lactose per 1-2 servings whereas milks from skim to whole milk are 12-13g per serving! The American council of dairy or cheese or milk or whatever says we can have 2 cups per day spread out. Nope! 4oz and I feel like crap. No way am I drinking 4-6 small cups of milk per day lol. I can’t remember to drink 4 bottles of water. Anywho just thought someone else with lactose intolerance might find this info helpful 😉.

Not lactose intolerant but I always enjoy research. That milk, that darn milk. How did something so wholesome and necessary get twisted along the way. Anytime I try to figure out why some food is unexpectedly high in sugar and carbs I check the ingredients and yup, there it is: milk. Before I'm misunderstood and comment attacked for bashing milk - I'm not. I'm just saying it's used in foods a lot and if you are intolerant you have to be so aware.

I hear you Peeper! I get sick every so often from too much dairy. I think it's a slow build up of other things that throw my digestive system off and an extra serving of dairy will reek havoc. Happened to me this last weekend. 😟 Got to go with what you know works for you. Others will almost always try to tell you it's okay to have a little bit of this or that, but you always know better.😊 Hope the ill effects are out of the way now. 👍

@Fulla, yes! I can tolerate it in casseroles and such. My protein shakes are premixed and milk concentrate. It makes me uncomfortable but nothing like milk. I was told a few years ago that I’m not lactose intolerant because I can eat it in casseroles and eat things like cheese and cottage cheese with no symptoms. So I researched on my one. Sure enough it sounds like I am lactose intolerant even if my dr didn’t think so! I’ve cream is a killer too! Love it and it serves its purpose if I ‘need to go’ lol. My friend thought it would be okay for me to have the steamed milk because she thought there wasn’t any lactose, or very small amount, and the steaming would help the digestion. Nope! And no comment bashing from me. Milk sucks lol. For me anyway.

@Becca, sucks doesn’t it? I do feel better but the tummy is still a bit upset. I’ve had a protein bar then grabbed a muffin thinking that might settle it. Probably have fajitas for dinner so who knows if that’ll make it worse or not lol. Wanted a premier protein shake earlier but decided against it because I was afraid adding the milk concentrate would be a bad idea. Some people don’t understand. Sometimes you can have a little and sometimes you can’t. I had 6-8oz of milk in that coffee. It hit me before the second one so I thought ‘eh why not have another since I’m already gonna feel bad anyway’. My kids can drink the stuff just fine. My teenager says it is starting to upset her tummy now if she has a big glass but it’s okay in cereal. Is she being dramatic or is she slowly becoming lactose intolerant? Who knows. I’ve offered calcium vitamins instead and she’s considering it.

If you are lactose intolerant you can buy lactose free milk and you can buy tablets that have the lactose digesting enzyme in them. Many people are lactose intolerant. Humans stopped producing the enzyme that aids in lactose digestion at about age 8. Evolution has allowed some of us to have some of the enzyme but not a lot. Lactaid tablets work well. And there is that lactose free milk. If you ever have your genetics sequenced they can tell you whether you carry the gene or not. I don’t, but too much of a good thing still bothers me. Not consistently, but often.

Hi there! Maybe Cashew milk? That’s my fave of the nut milks! Mom likes almond though. And Hazelnut exists. Have not tried but sounds yummy! There are also coconut milk varieties for sale. You probably CAN sell for 3$ a pop to friends and family! Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Yes, @Kenna is correct. The Ice Man, mummy found in the Himalayas, I think, was lactose intolerant. We really don't need milk, not after we can eat our food and not drink it. I was in my 20s, after I had my babies, that it started being a problem. You would think we would learn. I am sure our ancestors did. 😄 I sure hope your daughter doesn't end up suffering from it and that one of those remedies works for you and her both. Refined anything makes it worse for me.

I do like almond milk. I’m the only one in my household that does so it gets wasted quite often. I do love strawberry milk and I think the nut mills wouldn’t work well for that. More like a strawberry water taste and consistency I’d think. The only time I ever have milk is for the strawberry milk or a tiny bit in cereal. The coffee was a spur of the moment thing and my friend assured me it would cause no issues lol. My mom drank chocolate milk daily. My two youngest kiddos drink milk daily. Hubby can drink a gallon of the stuff. 🤷‍♀️ Thankfully maybe most of them got his genes and not mine in that area. I’m feeling better. Still a full feeling but not exactly full or hungry. Not exactly bloated either. Hard to describe lol.

Peeperjj— you can freeze milk, I do it all the time. Try freezing a small amount of your almond milk and see if it changes the consistency or texture any. If it’s ok, just put part of it in a mason jar and freeze it. No waste.
