Last weekend, I went to an SCA event in northern Iowa. It was an arts and sciences competition for novices and I was a judge. It always amazes me to see the talent and skills displayed at these things. We had 72 entrants and I wouldn't call most of the entries "novice". They were far too amazing!

After, due to my dietary restrictions and several vegetarians in the group, we went to a Pakistani restaurant instead of staying for feast. I got my favorite, aloo gobi, and three of the group got dishes with goat meat. At the end of the meal, the cook came out of the kitchen to see how we enjoyed our meals (and probably to look at the silly people dressed in weird clothes . . . oh, and did I mention that the cook was a young HUNK?) Anyway, he asked if I had tried the goat. I told him I often eat lamb because my DIL raises sheep, but I had never had goat. He told me to wait a minute and disappeared back into the kitchen. I thought he might have gone to get me a taste, but he came back with a 3 lb, sealed bag of goat meat! Color me shocked (and did I mention he was quite gorgeous?)

Soooooo, last night, I made a Crockpot full of Middle Eastern Goat Stew. The house smelled amazing when I woke up this morning. I'm going to put it up in containers. The second week-end in October, the people we stayed with up there are coming down for a "Pink Ribbon" event down here. I'm going to distribute the stew to all and sundry and send a sample back to my handsome Pakistani, to taste what I did with his gift. LOL!!!

I spent part of the day clearing brush around the garage. Now that it is getting considerably cooler, I can get back to clearing the property. As I brought down the small trees that have sprouted up, I also picked the wild grapes that are growing all through them. I will try to get the rest of the grapes tomorrow. They are much higher up in some of the bigger trees. I need to be on my A game when I bring them down. I'm going to try to make a few pints of wild grape jelly. They taste so sweet, but are so tiny!

I'm off to bed so I can get an early start. Love you all!

I'm thankful for:

Waking up.
Goat meat gifts from handsome strangers.
Wild grapes, free for the picking.
My wonderful friends on FS who have been so forgiving and encouraging.
The ability to still get around and have new experiences.
Learning something new, every single day!

Sandy, I have no idea why people give me things. It happens all the time and I am always surprised. When they happen to be handsome young men, all the better. LOL. I've missed you too. I'm pulling myself back together and will try not to get so disconnected again . . . from everything, not just FS. Can you feel me hugging you back? {{{{{{HUG!!!}}}}}

Helen, I figure any recipe that's made with lamb should work with goat. I'm putting in a quote from Wikipedia. As cited in a New York Times article, goat is "the most widely-consumed meat in the world."[2] Goat is a staple of Africa, Asia and South/Central America, and a delicacy in a few European cuisines.[2] I think lamb/mutton and pork follow in quick succession. I think, as animals, they are more easily fed and quicker to grow than beef. Plus, many of these countries don't have the vast pasturage that the U.S. has. I tried the stew last night and it's delicious! Hugs, my friend!

Angel, it was surprising, but fun.

Do you think it is because of the sheep Johanne?? Lol! I think it is probably just because you are a nice person and all good things are attracted to nice people :)

Joelae, this kind of thing never happened to me when I was young and able to act on such things. LOL! I think it's the whole "cute, little old lady" thing. I also have total strangers walking up to me and patting me on the head to tell me how beautiful my hair is. The whole "patting me on the head" thing is a bit odd (like strangers patting you on your tummy when you're pregnant"), but how I would have appreciated such attention when I was younger. :-)

Tracy, he really was very pretty and very tall. Even little old ladies can enjoy a hunk when there is one around. LOL!

Bren, if you've never had lamb, it's flavor is different enough (it doesn't taste like chicken. LOL!) that you might have to develop a taste for it. I know I did. The stew was quite delicious and the goat just a little leaner and richer than lamb. You used to be able to buy lamb chops in most grocery stores. Now they have become prohibitively expensive, but worth a try if you can find them. Lots of love back!

Tracy, as I said, I think it's the whole cute, little old lady thing. These days I resemble an Appalachian apple doll. All I need is the sun bonnet. :-)

Hey Johanne....some men like the older lady....I've had a few Mrs Robinson requests on my online dating lol!

Tracy, my X was 12 years younger than I and quite pretty. I loved it. However, now I look like a wrinkly, old grammy, so I think it's more, awwwwww, look at the cute little old lady. She smiled at me. Heehee.
