Well, yesterday I went completely off my diet. I'll not get into all of it, but it was definitely emotional eating. Whenever my baby brother (he's 53) comes to visit he starts arguments over what he feels should be his inheritance if something should happen to our Mom. I've had Mom since my Dad died 1983. My brother came for a visit a week ago. He is quite the ass. Well, yesterday in response my Mom asked me to take her somewhere (she's 86 and can't drive). It was a funeral parlor. I sat there as she planned her funeral and paid for it. As we walked out, she said "there now you won't have to worry, everything I have will be splits evenly by you kids". So, I went to McDonalds and had a Big Mac, fries and a shake. Haven't done that in over a year and a half. My heart and soul hurt at what Mom had to do and what I did in response.

I am sorry your brother is such a pain. your mother sounds pretty practical about things. Hopefully your mother will live a long long time!

Many a family is torn apart over inheritances. Anger, resentment, manipulation, lies and greed will transform otherwise decent people into someone unrecognizable. It's hard to believe these people you've known for years can act so badly after or even before the death of a loved one.
My mom called her kids together one day and handed us a sheet of paper. She sat at the dining room table telling us to take that paper and a pen and go through the house and write down anything that we wanted from her house. There are four of us and we gladly just went through the house and recorded on that paper the things that we would like to have. We came back to the table and everybody, knowing the value of the items, would negotiate if somebody wanted the same item. Mom got a kick out of all of this and found some of our choices surprising. Reasons for a certain choice had a story or memory that the others never knew. After all was said and done everybody had their paper with their inheritance written down and it was a happy and fun day. Mom made copies of all our papers and gave each of us and herself a copy of everyone's list. When mom died, everyone took their own piece of paper to the house and collected their items. Anything else was up for grabs or sold in the yard sale or given away. This worked well for us and this is what I'm doing with my kids. Real estate was sold and bank accounts closed and all monies equally divided and our family is still very much intact.

oh honey so sorry you had to go through that! sometimes our family can be so selfish. You have an amazing heart and such an unselfish spirit! I'm sure the meal you had won't hinder your progress.

Thanks you guys! I appreciate the paper idea, that would have been less creepy for me then the funeral prep. Mom is 86 and a serious pill, but she's my Mom and I can't imagine life without her. I don't do friends, I'm not good at it. I've had one that I've kept my entire life. I have Mom. She's my friend, my tormenter, my confidant, my laughter, my cohort in crime.
