yuck, now since someone brought up the caffeine itself as possibly messing with my ketone and glucose I checked that this morning too. one reading fasting and then 15 minutes after downing a 5 hour. no symptoms as I have reported before but yep, dropped my ketones to barely readable. that is how I started my day. it took me 3 hours after eating and 1 1/2 hour after cardio to get my ketones above 1 and my glucose was still high. Then I went to the bank to make a simple cash deposit, guess banking rules are changing had to cough up my license, then when I was pissed about that they then asked me to write down my occupation. I wrote down fish sales but now rethinking it I should have just said housewife. gosh it seems that no matter what you do someone is sticking their fingers into your private business. So being in a totally pissed off mood. I came home to whine and have my coffee. fog brain coming to help calm me down!


I think the reason I did not notice the dips before is because my ketones were so high in the higher range 2's and low 3's I was happy to have them drop a bit. I don't feel well when they are too high and glucose too low. balance thing. now that I am testing eating lower fat, it makes a huge difference.


I have to burn calories all day if I want to get my readings back to normal and that makes me feel like I am restarting my diet all over. I am in maintenance and I definitely do not want to have to work hard to maintain my weight and drop some fat. it feels like diet, I am over that.


The past week I have also been testing a new steak which has less fat and less flavor. I have really been unsettled this week and I think a lot of it is that I am not satisfied with my meal like I normally am. I know it may be odd but the difference in the flavor between the two types and fat is totally different. the lower fat level really makes a difference in the ketones.

so I will be running out to get my regular ribeyes this week. I am almost done with the short loin I got. I have just enough to get through the weekend. back to normal and I will have to get myself back into balance. Whether I do a minor reset this weekend with eating out of plan, I have not decided yet.

one thing I did learn before I started changing things, on the 2 weeks or so of maintenance eating like I normally do but more calories, is I could push my calories over maintenance and not gain a bunch of weight. easily adjusted with a weekly average. that was using higher fat and 5 hour energy. this week with lower fat, coffee and lower average calories all week I gained 2 pounds. so I did learn a bit about how my system is working in maintenance. I would prefer to eat more freely and enjoy things. low fat is not working for my enjoyment from dieting.

thanks Nikeit that is my feeling too. I am just old school and not used to people being upset about dealing in cash. and yes I endulged tonight in actually going out to dinner and having food I normally don't allow myself. I had plenty of calories to burn today and I burned them good. longhorn parmesan crusted chicken with no bread crumbs and lettuce with blue cheese dressing! can't have cheese without side effects but it was worth it!

too old fashioned gz9gig, I refuse to have an atm card. makes it easier for someone to steal my money. been burned before by banks with very hard policies about withdrawing cash through the drive through but somehow someone managed to get about 30,000 out the window a couple decades ago. I refused to do online banking because of that bad experience. my husband and I have linked accounts on one bank and that really upset me that they automatically linked the accounts and put it online. my main accounts are at another bank and absolutely no online for him there or for me. my checking link with him I have been reducing down to a reasonable level for monthly bills.

I totally enjoyed the dinner it is nice to have a change of pace. my husband likes to take me out and lately I have just not been willing to risk an allergy attack. things were super bad last month. but I stayed safe with a known meal. I should sleep good tonight!

Got it; I never use debit cards, but I do use ATMs to deposit and withdraw cash and checks. With all the hacking and identity theft, there are more options now to protect your accounts.

We have a USAA credit card. The number has been stolen and used at least three times now. Some for school books, some for food, Walmart and one large 10k purchase for bibles by an Australian church. 😳 Our card is awesome! Each time they call and ask if it’s us, put a hold on it and we never have to pay for it because we can prove we aren’t in Australia or wherever. Once it was used here and they trusted our word that it wasn’t us. It’s a hassle going two weeks without it as hubby does all our stuff with it and all bills are paid off of it monthly. But this time they sent us different numbers when it renewed. Hubbys was stolen and mine wasn’t so I could keep my card. I had to go everywhere with hubby to buy his stuff though lol. Haha he had no choice but to take me along and talk to me for over a eeek 😈.

Won't ever use an ATM or do any banking on line. All the bank tellers at my bank know me personally. I like it that way! My credit card company is great, calls us at the slightest oddity. Recently they found a small charge coming from a business in an adjoining state, $1.87. They called us to verify. Was not a charge I'd ever make. Scammers occasionally put a small amount on credit cards to see if the number is valid, then hit you with a $1,000 charge. My CC company overnighted a new card with new number and code right away. We received it the next day. Now that's service my friends! 💰💳

yep theft is a big concern Peeperjj, my husband has had issues several times with his credit cards too. I limit what I do online mostly it is paypal and amazon. fortunately those have been safe for me thank goodness.

Smart! Monitor your accounts and report unauthorized transactions right away. As long as you are timely in reporting any issues you won’t be held liable for a loss. Lots of consumer protections out there.

Yep, I have had to dispute charges 8 or so times, the credit card companies are very good about disputed charges. I have lived in 5 states in the last 15 years due to job changes during the recession, so there is no single bank that "knows" me. So I do pretty much all my banking and bill payment online, and use "mobile deposit" for checks. I stayed with my old out of state bank for years, but recently switched to a cash management account with Fidelity.

baskington, I was intrigued by your comment about caffeine and ketones. I did glucose and ketone readings today, first before breakfast and coffee; then a 2nd reading an hour after my 2nd coffee. My first readings: BS 80, ketones 0.8; second/ BS 89, ketones 2.3. So for me, caffeine doesn't seem to bring my ketones down. Breakfast was 1 egg + 2 whites, scrambled with butter; so zero carbs. Black coffee, no sweetener.

I tried lower fat meat and just didn't feel good even when I "added" fat. interesting. hang in there, I'd try testing 30 min after energy drink . they are sweet, something in them, but test more then once before thinking you need to get rid of them. have a good steak for me 👍

yes Jenjabba the lower fat content to protein just does not work, I find myself happier and more motivated on the minimum of 70% fat. I have tested both the coffee and the energy drink fasting levels more than once. the energy drink is more manageable as I don't also have the brain fog. the combo of both the lower ketones and stable glucose levels of the higher protein lower fat and the caffeine dropping my ketones and raising the glucose is the problem. with much lower ketones it just knocks me down too much. will be seeing how it goes with the normal fat to protein ratio. this morning I woke up early after a high fat day and had coffee. an hour later my ketones were still reasonable at 1.3 and the glucose is 3.9. so high fat gives me room to accept the drop and still stay in the good range for fat loss.

I am happy for you Gz9gjg, not everyone is effected by caffeine, if the coffee was not also a problem with brain fog I would use it, 5 hour does have a little artificial sweetener in it too but very minor. I generally only take half anyways as it has more caffeine than coffee. with a higher fat to protein ration I think it can work out as I don't think I want to go totally caffeine free though it would be nice. only so much I can give up.
